Alan Hale, who played Skipper, has an amazing audition story. The role of Skipper was one of the hardest roles to cast, Schwartz auditioning several stars – but none of them matched the profile of the character. Alan was filming for Bullet for a Bad Man when he was contacted about the show. When he got to LA he ended spending the day with Bob Denver riding horses, hitchhiking and in a taxi – not the usual audition! He made it back in Utah in time to finish his other filming.
