Jerry Van Dyke Was Originally Supposed To Play Gilligan

Schwartz’s first choice to play Gilligan was Jerry Van Dyke, however, Dyke said that the script was the worst thing he had ever read and he was not keen to get on board with the sitcom. Way to let a guy down. Dyke said:
‘I turned it down and took My Mother the Car. But, again, it was really good, because I’d [have] been forever known as Gilligan. So that worked out, too!’
