The protagonist of the show, Gilligan is never referred to by his first name which, hysterically is Willy! The name Gilligan was selected randomly from the LA telephone directory. The actor who played the lead role; Bob Denver, insisted that his character was to always be called Gilligan, not Willy. And do we blame him?

Sherwood Schwartz, the mind of the show and the scriptwriter, used a lecture topic from his time at New York Univerisity as inspiration for the show. The only things I get from my lectures are headaches. He remembers his professor asking the class to do a minute long speech on ‘if you were stranded on a desert island, what is the one item you would like to have?’ Schwartz used this as a pitch for the sitcom years later as he wanted to show a world where people of various classes had to learn to live together. He wanted the show to be a ‘social microcosm’.
