These Researchers Are Looking for Someone to Eat Avocados All Day (And Get Paid)

I could eat avocados all day.

Avocados are just so taste-bud-defyingly-delicious. You eat ’em for breakfast, mashed up serious on a crisp slice of toast. You top off your fresh-off-the-grill, cheese-melted burger with ’em. You mix it up with jalapeños, onions, and lemon juice for the best chip dip ever. Need I go on? Possibilities are endless.

So here’s a present for you (because I’m always giving you presents): Loma Linda University in California will actually pay you to eat this astoundingly versatile fruit. Yes, the dream job you’ve been waiting for. You’re welcome.

Avocados will be provided, and you’ll get paid $300 (okay, so maybe it’s not your dream job). You can choose whether you want to eat one avocado daily or just two per month for a testing period of six months. The study will decide whether avocados are superfoods or if their high fat content disqualifies the fruit from being classified as such.

Joan Sabaté, who is in charge of the study, explains what you need to qualify:

“The study will examine whether eating one avocado per day reduces visceral adipose fat in the abdomen.

In order to apply, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be 25 years of age or older.
  2. Be willing to either eat one avocado per day for six months or eat only two avocados per month for the same period.
  3. Measure at least 40 inches around the waist if they are male.
  4. Measure at least 35 inches around the waist if they are female.

If you sound like the perfect fit, make sure you sign up right away because there’s only a total of 1000 spots available, with 250 each at Loma Linda University, Penn State University, Tufts University, and the University of California. While eating (or not eating) those avocados, you’ll get free MRI’s and health screenings every month to monitor what effects the avocados have on you. Oh, and don’t feel like you’re missing out if you’re part of the control group; you’ll get 24 avocados at the end of all this to match up with the other group.
