2. Colossus of Rhodes
Colossus of Rhodes was an unexplained wonder of the world, even back when it was built, in 305 BCE. It stood in the ancient Greek city of Rhodes, as a symbol of the sun god Helios.
The statute was said to be over 105 feet tall, and primarily built out of Bronze and iron. Similar to the lighthouse of Alexandria, Colossus of Rhodes also toppled over as a result of an earthquake.
After an Arabian invasion in Greece, the statute was broken up into pieces, and the bronze and other valuables were sold for scrap. The pieces of the statute totaled more than 900 camel loads.
