Do We Really Want Oprah Winfrey For President 2020?

Let’s all hope not.

Following an inspirational speech at the Golden Globes, there is speculation that Oprah Winfrey may be running for president.

Seeing as Oprah Winfrey is the first black woman to win the Cecil B. Demille Award, it may not surprise that she spoke passionately about injustice and current issues that have been bubbling behind the scenes for years now.

Following the rise of the #MeToo movement, her words gave people hope that they were prescient of a better future as she called for a “brighter morning even in our darkest nights”. However, people may have gotten a little overzealous regarding this.

After this speech at the awards ceremony, there was widespread speculation that Oprah may, in fact, be running for president. Many of the cries for her to undertake this were ironic, though a lesson to be learned on the internet is that nothing stays ironic for long.

As beloved as Oprah Winfrey is, and as tough times may be, I feel like America needs a bit of a break from TV show stars. At least in the world of politics.

Seth MacFarlane – comedian, writer, and the creator of Family Guy – appears to share similar doubts in a Tweet he posted.

I’ve gotta admit, “troublingly dystopian” is pretty apt.

This public outcry for Oprah Winfrey 2020 hasn’t escaped the attention of current president Donald Trump either. Humble as ever, when asked about Oprah he immediately responded he would beat her, but goes on to say how he likes her and “doesn’t think she’s going to run”.

To be fair, her speech did sound presidential, so I can see why people clamored to pronounce it as such. Even though I’m not so hot on the idea of more TV star presidents, her words at the Golden Globes award ceremony did ring true:

“I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is on the horizon. And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women”.

At the very least, it wouldn’t be the first time a president brushed close to being in Sharknado 3.
