January is a box of chocolates for Pop music – but whatever we’re getting, you know it’s bound for brilliance.
The nascent new year wasted no time easing Pop’s listening ears into a fresh fresco of sound. A myriad of statement singles, from both Pop’s seasoned maestros and shiny newcomers, have kicked off the year with a sharp edge. These artists have set off into their enthralling next chapters with a bang.
KATSEYE – Internet Girl
Internet Girl‘s claptrap choral hook implores listeners to “Eat Zucchini” with a distorted snarl. This fierce ridiculousness coins the track a sequel to the global girl group’s trailblazing single Gnarly. Like its predecessor, the track is an abrasive yet stylish confection of nonsense.
Despite the razor-sharp adrenaline of its previous live performances, the recorded version of Internet Girl faced mixed reactions upon release. An alternate production lacking the track’s promised rock influence met unsatisfied ears. Particularly, listeners were taken aback by an infant’s prerecorded warble replacing the girl’s iconic line delivery.
Inevitably, Katseye were nominated for Best New Artist at this week’s GRAMMY Awards, and despite leaving without a trophy clutched in their bejewelled manicures, delivered a truly gnarly performance.
Bruno Mars – I Just Might
After ten years of silence from the father of modern funk-pop, Bruno Mars has resurfaced from the depths of his hiatus. Mars’s joyous reentry into the limelight, I Just Might is a summery, retro-party anthem. The song blows dust off the trumpets and handclaps that defined Mars’s glory days. I Just Might proves that Mars’s musicianship and ability to concoct a catchy tune will perpetually stand the test of time.
Accordingly, the 16-time GRAMMY Award winner has reemerged with a second surprise – the announcement of his forthcoming LP The Romantic, due for an explosive release onto the dancefloor come February 27th.
Melanie Martinez – POSSESSION
POSSESSION marks the first release of Melanie Martinez’s entire career since the slaughter of “Crybaby” – a semi-autobiographical alter ego Martinez casts herself as across her discography. With this narrative departure comes a newfound creative freedom for the cherubic chanteuse. She plays in uncharted visual terrain whilst sustaining the whimsical quiddities her fans know and love.
Following the success of the “Crybaby” album trilogy, POSSESSION is an act of defiance against Martinez’s existing oeuvre. Martinez’s lyrics deliver scathing callouts with the tender warmth of her signature murmur. This familiar contrast reminds fans that, despite Martinez’s new realm, they can have faith in her ever-buzzing synthesis of mischief and magic.
Subsequently, Martinez took to Instagram on Monday to divulge her fourth LP “HADES”, out March 27th.
Nessa Barrett – High On Heaven
High On Heaven is Barrett’s first striptease since her sophomore provocation AFTERCARE, a record that interrogates the fabled conflation of sexual versus emotional intimacy. Following AFTERCARE‘s narrative of tiptoeing around attachment, High On Heaven is a surrender to love’s intoxication.
This sultry sonnet is no stranger to the exuberant “Nessa Nation” however. Despite it’s infancy, listeners across the globe have had every High On Heaven lyric committed to memory since October. The track became an unreleased fan favourite after Nessa’s TikTok teasers acquired generous virality. Meanwhile, Australian fans screamed the words at the AFTERCARE World Tour’s concluding stops in December last year.
Harry Styles – Aperture
Expectedly, Harry Styles’s sudden reappearance has sparked an international fangirl furore. His shiny new release Aperture is a mild dance-pop track designed for hugging strangers beneath the glow of the mirrorball. The sonnet is a smiley subduement for the Watermelon Sugar singer, composed of downtempo piano and relaxed synth stacks.
Styles accompanied the release by unveiling his long-anticipated record KISS ALL THE TIME. DISCO, OCCASIONALLY, with a world tour in tow. The One Direction veteran additionally announced a seismic 30-show residency at New York’s renowned Madison Square Garden. Fan’s rampant excitement shattered Ticketmaster’s all-time record for presale registrations, recording a whopping 11.5 million eager signups.
What’s Poppin for the rest of the year?
These artists are a mere slice of the sounds set to define pop music in 2026. The forthcoming year boasts a plethora of highly anticipated releases, spanning from pop music’s rookies to its ringmasters.
Lo and behold, Pop music is a cathartic release, and unbridled fun is of the essence. Sound and colour are packaged and accessorised as the muso and their intricate empire see fit. This January has reminded us of Pop’s limitless evolution and showcased the capacious power of reinvention.
