Pete Davidson, Lindsay Lohan, Scarlett Johansson, and more.
Oh the Super Bowl! That special time of year when Americans sit back, relax, and watch grown men run into each other.
Jokes aside, the Super Bowl has become a bit of a national holiday, piquing the interests of both football and non-football fans alike. Some watch for the sports, while others solely for the commercials.
After many years, commercials have become a bit of a Super Bowl staple. They’re often flashy, expensive, and—because they reach a wide audience— they generate conversation.
Though NBC has not made numbers public, this year’s commercial slots were predicted to cost a whopping $6.5 million, the highest value yet.
Expensive as they were, this year’s commercials did not disappoint. Celebrities dominated almost all of this year’s commercials, followed by a huge dose of humor and nostalgia.
Some highlights include Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd teaming up in an ad for Lays, Lindsay Lohan and Planet Fitness poking fun of her old partying days, and Scarlet Johansson and husband Colin Jost promoting Amazon’s Alexa.
30 first-time advertisers also joined in the game, compared to 26 last year and seven in 2020. Newcomers included cryptocurrency giants like FTX and Crypto.com, as well as electric vehicles like General Motors’ “EV” pitch.
To rev up hype, many commercials were released on YouRube ahead of the Super Bowl.
According to the LA Times:
“They need to be conversation starters that can engage consumers who will spread advertisers’ messages on social media, garnering impressions on top of the massive audience watching the game.”
As for the star studded casts and heavy dose of nostalgia? Mood and relatability, of course.
