Halifax, Nova Scotia — In a performance industry dominated by endorsements, discount codes, and transactional athlete deals, a different model is quietly gaining traction. Headstrong, founded by Halifax-based scientist and entrepreneur Darren Burke and pro hockey player Evan Nause, is building something intentionally different: a mission-aligned team of top performers who care deeply about protecting their brain, improving performance, and safeguarding their mental health.
Rather than assembling a traditional roster of sponsored athletes, Headstrong is growing what it calls Team Headstrong, a rapidly expanding group of professional athletes and elite performers who choose to be involved because they believe in the mission, not because they were paid to post.
Why Alignment Matters More Than Reach
For Burke, the decision to build a team instead of an endorsement list was deliberate.
“For too long, athletes have been treated as marketing assets,” he explains. “We wanted to create a space where athletes and top performers could engage honestly around brain health and mental health without pressure to perform for an audience.”
Team Headstrong is built on shared values. Members are aligned around the idea that the brain is the true engine of performance, and that mental health is not separate from elite output but central to it.
This alignment has proven magnetic. Despite being only months old, Headstrong’s athlete community is growing quickly across multiple sports and performance domains.
A Safe, Private Community for Top Performers
A defining feature of Team Headstrong is access to a private platform designed specifically for its members. Unlike public social media spaces, this environment allows athletes and top performers to speak candidly, share experiences, and support one another without fear of judgment or exposure.
Conversations inside the community range from performance optimization and recovery to identity, pressure, and the mental demands of competing and leading at the highest levels.
“Top performers often feel isolated,” Nause says. “They are surrounded by people, but rarely given safe spaces to talk honestly about what is happening in their heads.”
By creating a trusted, invitation-based environment, Headstrong is addressing a gap that many athletes say has existed throughout their careers.
Mentorship as a Cornerstone
Headstrong’s team model is also rooted in mentorship. One early example is Burke’s work with professional hockey player Evan Nause, who plays within the Florida Panthers organization. Nause is not just an athlete on the roster, but a new entrepreneur being actively mentored as he builds his first business alongside his playing career.
This approach reflects Headstrong’s broader philosophy. Athletes are not viewed only through the lens of current performance, but as future leaders, builders, and contributors beyond sport.
“Mental health and brain health do not stop mattering when the game ends,” Burke notes. “If anything, that transition is when support matters most.”
More Than a Supplement Brand
While Headstrong is preparing for its official commercial launch later this year, the company is clear that it is not trying to be just another supplement brand. Its products are being designed as part of a larger ecosystem that integrates science, community, and long-term thinking around performance.
The focus on brain health places Headstrong at the intersection of physical output, cognitive performance, and mental resilience. This positioning is resonating not only with athletes, but also with entrepreneurs, executives, and high performers who face similar pressures in different arenas.
“We see athletes as proof, not the ceiling,” says Burke. “The same mental demands exist in business, leadership, and life.”
Growing Quietly, Building Intentionally
As Headstrong continues to expand its team and form strategic partnerships, growth is being approached with patience and discipline. The emphasis remains on trust, credibility, and mission alignment rather than speed or hype.
From bases in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Los Angeles, California, Headstrong is building a globally relevant performance brand grounded in science and human connection. One that believes protecting the brain and mental health is not a weakness, but a competitive advantage.
