While the Flat Earth movement is one that doesn’t actually hurt anyone (we are looking at you, anti-vaxx movement) it is a mind boggling one! Contrary to popular belief, these people don’t believe that if you find the edge of the earth, you’ll fall off. Rather, they believe we are stuck inside a giant snow globe.
Most recently, Flat Earther Jay Descaby has announced he will be making an expedition to Antarctica to “shut this debate down once and for all”. He claims that if you were to sail all the way around the edge of Antarctica, the distance would be 60 kilometers across! This is despite the literal mountains of scientific evidence that shows Antarctica is 14 million sq km.
With the popularity of Netflix’s Behind the Curve, it comes as no surprise that Descasby will be documenting his journey to map Antarctica for television. Much like other Flat Earthers who attempt to prove the truth about our world, will Descasby’s experiment prove anything? It’s unlikely that any journey to Antarctica will show any new scientific evidence.
Not all Flat Earther’s are conspiracy theory nuts, but Descasby does seem to subscribe to many interesting theories and beliefs. An illuminating read through his Twitter feed shows that Descasby might also be an anti-semite. He seems to go back and forth between being a Donald Trump supporter and hater all at the same time. All of these facts can be see as rather harmless, but put together as a picture it paints a troubling portrait.

The Flat Earth movement is unlikely to go anywhere. In fact, it seems to only be gaining followers and there are conventions you can even attend! But don’t forget to know your facts before going: gravity is fake, the moon landing was fake, and the Earth is infinite.
Excuse us while we go laugh.
