Where is Akon Building a City and Why?

Where is Akon City and why is it being built?

Rapper and Musician Akon has been causing quite the stir with the news that he is building a Wakanda style city in Senegal, Africa. Akon is of Senegalese decent and wants to bring opportunity to his country. According to his website, he was born in Senegal but left at the age of seven to live in New Jersey.

Macky Sall, the president of Senegal, gifted Akon a 2,000 acre plot of land to build this futuristic city. Many are referring to it as a “crypto-city” and Akon City will trade exclusively in AKoin, a crypto-currency of Akon’s own design.

Akon City is not the first time this savvy business man has tried to help Africa. According to CNN “Across 36 African countries, just 2 in 5 people have access to a reliable supply of energy throughout the day”. Akon saw this as an opportunity to help his homeland and vowed to supply electricity for many across the content.

Celebrities are such highly visible people and there are many whom champion various causes. However, this is the first time a celebrity has used their status to create an entire city! Akon should be celebrated for this endeavor and maybe people in power will take notice. It takes someone with true passion, heart and love to see a need and create a solution to the issue.

What do you think about Akon City? Would you go to visit once it’s complete? Let us know in the comments!
