Conservation officials in Australia are seeking two people to act as live-in caretakers on the “isolated tropical island” of Low Isles, 9 miles off the coast of Port Douglas, Queensland.
Whilst it’s not all surfing and sunbathing, that glorious warm sand and intensely blue sea beats out an office job any day of the week.
Now, if you’ve watched Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse you may be inclined to turn and sprint in the opposite direction of this isolated-island-caretaker business… or maybe not if you’re into some freaky sh*t. However, while Low Isles has a population of zero, it is far from desolate; travel companies bring 60,000 day tourists to the island every year.
Marine Park Authority Assistant Director, Dr Mark Read said it’s a popular position with a key role in maintaining the history and conservation of the island.
“They’re up for maintaining the buildings and the infrastructure, weeding the island. They also do a lot of liaison with the tourism operators who come out to the location.
They have some less glamorous jobs like cleaning the toilets that are on the island, but they also get to do some really interesting things like count bird populations that nest on the island.”
Other duties include maintaining the solar power and sewerage treatment systems, carefully limiting electricity and water use. The internet is said to be slow but, you never know, getting away from social media may turn out to be a blessing!
The job description reads as follows:
Are you passionate about the Great Barrier Reef and island conservation, living sustainably, and possess high-level people management and engagement skills?
Could you live and work on an isolated tropical island in the beautiful Great Barrier Reef Marine Park?
Australia’s lead management agency for the Great Barrier Reef is now seeking submissions via a merit-based tender process for caretakers on Low Isles, located 15 km offshore from Port Douglas within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority appoints caretakers to this sustainable island in the Marine Park to ensure its natural and heritage values are maintained.
We’re seeking people with a passion for sustainability and natural heritage, experience in maintaining infrastructure and who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty and live remotely.
If you want to be in with a chance, submit your application here by 3pm ACT on Friday September 25.
