Iconic rapper of the 90s Eminem can now add restauranteur to his list of accolades with the opening of his new restaurant “Mom’s Spaghetti” in Detroit.

On September 29, Eminem (real name Marshall Mathers) opened the doors to Mom’s Spaghetti, an Italian joint named after the iconic lyric in “Lose Yourself,” from the 2002 film 8 Mile with the memorable line “His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy / There’s vomit on his sweater already, mom’s spaghetti”. The restaurant was designed to be a “homegrown, DIY experience” complete with a walk-up window and a small, diner-like location.

The menu features a spaghetti recipe that includes “a scratch sauce that tastes like it’s straight from the jar, and wok-firing the noodles gives it that leftover pasta snap,” said Curt Catallo, co-owner of Union Joints restaurant group. The spaghetti is priced at nine dollars, with additional charges of three to five dollars for adding meatballs or vegan balls. They also serve ‘sghetti sandwiches using the same spaghetti recipe in between two slices of bread.

Mathers had previously collaborated with Union Joints restaurant group in having various Mom’s Spaghetti pop-up shops at venues he played to test the idea with consumers. In 2018, he opened a pop-up at Coachella music festival and received rave reviews, one festival go-er even saying they would go back to Coachella if Mom’s Spaghetti was offered.

Word spread quickly about the new restaurant thanks to an unusual local commercial featuring the rapper vomiting out of a Chinese takeout container with ‘Mom’s Spaghetti’ written across the box. According to The Detroit Free Press, many fans camped out all day for a spot in line, which with time-stretched for many blocks.

“Mom’s Spaghetti” is hardly just a walk-up restaurant. It also features an upstairs store called the Trailer, which features a “uniquely-curated environment and obtain merch and other items from Eminem and his new pasta operation”
