Don’t cry over spilled milk. But cereal? Maybe.

For many people, eating a perfectly normal snack in front of strangers is enough to cause anxiety. But try eating cereal from a storage bucket with a ladle in a crowded New York subway— that’s what TikTok star Josh Popkin did.

Josh Popkin is a creator on TikTok with over 3.3 million followers. His usual content takes on a comedic tone, much like the aforementioned cereal. Watch this prank below.

“Someone was like, ‘I cannot believe this is happening,'” Popkin narrates in the TikTok.

At best, this prank is inconvenient and irritating for everyone involved. But the masks visible on passengers suggests why this prank is downright inexcusable in today’s uncertain times.

Purposefully spilling half-eaten cereal in milk is certainly far from the most hygienic behavior in a global pandemic— everywhere those Fruity Pebbles spilled, so did Popkin’s germs.

And to make matters worse, the passengers who were unlucky enough to be exposed to this prank clearly did not have the luxury of staying home. Many of those still using public transportation, in which the necessary six-foot distance between passengers is almost impossible to achieve, are essential workers with no other way to commute.

And by choosing this place to perform his prank, Popkin put those very essential workers in even more danger.

Even further, other essential workers were likely the ones who had to clean up the milky mess.

Popkin recognized that this was reckless behavior. He deleted the video from his original TikTok account and even posted an apology video in which he read 50 of his hate comments. Watch the apology below.

“First of all, I’m not funny,” Popkin conceded in the apology video. “Usually, I try to be funny, and I’m not funny.”

“The fact that I even thought that that was okay is ridiculous,” he says before going on to read 50 of his hate comments.

Though his apology is commendable, acts like this that threaten public health on a global level are unforgivable. In a time where it is unwise to even breathe near someone, spilling half-eaten cereal on strangers completely crosses the line.
