WATCH: TDK’s Absurd Abilities Revealed In Exclusive ‘The Suicide Squad’ Clip

Introducing one of the strangest and most obscure comic-book characters…

DC Comics

James Gunn’s whacky and comedic tone for his new film, the long-anticipated ‘The Suicide Squad’ sequel, has been revealed in IGN’s latest video which introduces fans to TDK (aka the Detachable Kid).

DC Comics’ upcoming film, THE SUICIDE SQUAD looks set to surprise viewers with its absurdly quirky R-Rated feature, which has been further revealed in a new video published by IGN on Friday. In the 40-second clip, TDK (The Detachable Kid), played by Nathan Fillion, shows off his ridiculous ability to detach his arms and attack soldiers from afar whilst the other characters look on in disbelief.

Based on the comics by Jon Ostrander, the plot of the movie centers around the Suicide Squad (aka Task Force X) – a group of highly powerful and dysfunctional villains who are forced to work together and perform dangerous tasks in place of military units. Controlled by Amanda Waller’s secret government agency, members of the squad receive reduced prison sentences in exchange for their services if they make it out of the assigned missions alive.

THE NEW (?) TASK FORCE X

The upcoming film will feature a whole new ensemble of characters, many of whom are largely unknown and haven’t been seen on screen before. The cast features several A-list celebrities including John Cena as ‘Peacemaker’, Idris Elba as ‘Bloodsport’, Sylvester Stallone as ‘King Shark’, Alice Braga as ‘Sol Soria’, Pete Davidson as ‘Blackguard’, and Mayling Ng as ‘Mongal’.

With the movie appearing to take a step away from the widely unpopular 2016 Suicide Squad film, only four members of the previous cast have returned to their roles – including Viola Davis as ‘Amanda Waller’, Joel Kinnaman as ‘Rick Flag’, Jai Courtney as ‘Captain Boomerang’ and of course, Margot Robbie as ‘Harley Quinn’. Although this feature is still part of the DC Comics Extended Universe of films (DCEU), Gunn appears to have reimagined Task Force X by removing characters including Jared Leto’s ‘Joker’ from the franchise.

The trailers for the feature indicate Gunn’s intention of expanding the comic-book film genre beyond traditional stories of heroic justice. Instead of focussing on comic heroes, The Suicide Squad encourages viewers to fall in love with the whacky and eccentric rejects who aren’t always morally righteous. Influenced by James Gunn’s filmography (which includes Marvel’s The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise) the dark comedic tones of the movie mark a step away from the DCEU’s previous gritty films like ‘Batman vs Superman’.

The Suicide Squad’s alternative take on the heroic team-ups currently on cinema screens appears confident in its success – with a spinoff series for the character ‘Peacemaker’ already in the works and set to release in early 2022 on HBO Max.

The movie is coming to theatres on 30th July in the UK and 6th August in the US. It will also become available on streaming service HBO Max from 6th August.
