Throwback Disney from the 90s created so many great movies and TV shows that being a young child meant you had so many good options to get out of bed early for. All of us 90s kids now are wishing we could go back to those days of actually wanting to wake up at 6 A.M. and stay at home watching TV all day. Sick days were the best because parents would actually let us do that. Now it’s just going to work, maybe eat, stay caffeinated, and hopefully get some sleep. Why did we want to grow up so fast and become adults again? One of our favorite Disney characters has been long debated whether Goofy is in fact a dog or not. There’s finally an answer.
Bill Farmer, the voice of Goofy since 1987, has brought in his perspective of what Goofy really is. There have been speculations for decades about whether Goofy is a dog or not or if he is possibly a cow. A cow seems like a stretch but some people think maybe he is because Goofy did have some kind of attraction to Clarabelle Cow. Farmer compares Goofy and Pluto and makes it obvious that Pluto is a dog and Goofy is not even close. He looks closest to a dog to this writer but maybe Goofy is just goofy, a character all his own.
What Does Everyone Think?
Farmer has this to say about what Goofy is:
“Pluto is a dog, but Goofy seems to be in the canine family in the same way that a wolf is not a dog, but they also are in the canine family. I think Canis Goofus is the technical Latin term for what Goofy is. He’s just Goofy.“

Whether he’s a dog or a cow or some other kind of animal or not, Goofy is still one of the beloved Disney characters. Even though it feels like we need answers to everything, sometimes no answer is fine. But with the world we live in, we can have answers at our fingertips in seconds so the answers have to be out there. Whatever you believe, I think we can agree that Goofy is a funny and loveable character that will always make us laugh and is an early example of being a single dad. He and his son Max aren’t always the perfect son and dad, but Disney gave us single dad way sooner than other TV shows, animated or not, ever did. That is groundbreaking looking back on it now. Keep making us laugh Goofy and say hi to Max for us.
