‘The Glassworker’ becomes Pakistan’s first-ever hand-drawn animation

A Kickstarter campaign for an animation project by writer and director Usman Riaz raised $116,000 (£80,000) to produce Pakistan’s first-ever hand-drawn animation.

Produced by Mano Animation Studios the animation tells the story of Vincent who is learning the art of glass-blowing from his father. Vincent falls in love with Alliz, who often visits their shop.

The animation aims to comment on the effects of war on children, following the characters through their formative years as life gets increasingly “complicated and inhibits their relationship,”.

Riaz hopes to have The Glassworker completed by the end of 2020. “So for the next few years, we will keep our heads down and work as hard as we can to complete this and do it properly.” Said Riaz. So far the project consists of a prelude that contains the opening sciences and a behind-the-scenes documentary on the creation of the project.

Mano Animation Studios is a small team from Pakistan, which now extends to Malaysia, South Africa, Canada, the US, and the UK.

“We have come so far in such a short time and I am extremely grateful to everyone who has supported us.

We have expanded the team with more animators, character designers, architectural and environment designers, background and concept artists to realize our vision for the film.”
