Both Planet Earth and Planet Earth II are renowned for their beautiful and artistic portrayals of life in the wild. From majestic mountains to exquisite deserts, Sir David Attenborough has taken us to see it all through his narration.

As a result of his narration, the public are able to see the interactions and mannerisms of animals that are normally unapproachable.

Of course, one of the most popular questions about the show have to be: “Aren’t there risks to the film crew while shooting such a potentially dangerous programme?”. And to that question, we have an answer. Yep.

During the shooting of the episode “Cities” in Harar, Ethiopia, the film crew wanted to examine the relationship between the humans and animals that co-exist in one location. However, this is where they received the shock of their lives: the animal gang-fights that establish which animal can enter the city and feed on leftover bones from the butcher.

The “Cities” Episode Producer, Fredi Devas, explained the terrifying scene as “A piece of ground where they can meet up like the gangs in Westside Story and have it out. They really fight. You’ve got a hundred around you, running around your feet and legs en masse, turning on each other.”

Stay safe, Planet Earth II crew.
