The thriller series Poker Face from writer-director Rian Johnson for Peacock is a rare example of a show that fulfills its elusive promise of entertainment. Every week, a new case and a fresh set of suspects are presented to Natasha Lyonne’s “detective” in this murder mystery series. Johnson has said that Charlie Cale is a human lie detector and her skills are practically superhuman in interviews. As a casino employee at the beginning of the episode, the character later travels on a cross-country road trip where she encounters many mysteries.

Johnson disclosed on Twitter that he wrote the first episode of Poker Face before creating the show Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery following the show’s premiere. He said,

“Episode one of Poker Face: Dead man’s Hand was written and directed by me; in fact, I created the script in 2020, just before I started writing Glass Onion. Along with introducing Charlie, I also wanted to clarify what kind of format each episode will follow moving forward.”

Poker Face came before Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, as famous murder mystery writer-director Rian Johnson wrote the first episode of his new comedy before beginning production on the Netflix film. With the help of the highly acclaimed 2019 star-studded mystery Knives Out, Johnson gained recognition in the genre.

Johnson’s exceptional writing abilities would lead to his nomination for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Glass Onion included a brief Knives Out series and Poker Face crossover, indicating that perhaps both projects do have the same DNA after all, even though there are considerable differences between the films and the TV show.
