Over the last few years, more and more video games have been adapted into films and TV shows for people to watch. Some of these have become more popular over the years, with multiple adaptations. However, some of these adaptations are new to the real-life world.
Whether you’re a video game fiend or just an avid watcher, each movie and TV show will appeal to somebody. This is a result of their creative plots and similarities to existing shows. For example, you may discover that a specific show may be similar to the post-apocalyptic horror genre. Therefore, fans who enjoy that are likely to end up liking others within a similar genre.
Let’s take a quick glance at some TV shows and movies that are currently being discussed within the video game community. Some of these have already been released. However, there are a couple that are set to be released in the upcoming year or so.
TV Shows
The Last of Us (2023 – Present)
This American post-apocalyptic drama adaptation stars Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) and Pedro Pascal (The Fantastic Four: First Steps) as the two main characters. The concept of this video game is set decades after a mass fungal infection collapses society. As a result, the two main characters must save themselves from zombie-like characters. Subsequently, Ellie and Joel have to travel across the United States in order to save themselves. Additionally, they are also trying to rescue others they find along the way.
Fans of the popular drama The Walking Dead are likely to love this game adaptation. This is because of the similarities it has to The Last of Us, with their genres overlapping. This is seen through the post-apocalyptic concept throughout both shows.
There are currently only 2 seasons available of The Last of Us. With filming for the third season set to start in April this year, viewers are expecting to be able to watch it from the following year. You can watch the existing sixteen episodes on HBO Max (USA) and Now TV (UK).
Tomb Raider (TBA)
The live-action TV version of Tomb Raider is based on the action-adventure video game with British archeologist Lara Croft. Croft focuses on solving puzzles, exploring land, and fighting enemies. These quests can consist of navigating specific locations filled with traps and challenges, where she has to break specific objects throughout the map. Plus, many more side quests and challenges you can find along the way.
The Tomb Raider TV show follows the 2018 release of the Tomb Raider movie, starring Alicia Vikander and Walton Goggins. It has been announced that Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner will be playing the main role of Lara Croft. However, there is not a high amount of information available as of right now about what this show will entail. But we can predict that it will follow the same structure as the existing games.
With the show being produced and released on Amazon Prime Video, there is no doubt that this will be anticipated. With filming only starting in January, this adaptation will likely be released throughout 2027.
Movies
Resident Evil (18th September 2026)
Resident Evil is an upcoming horror film that serves as the second reboot of an already existing film series. Directed by Zach Cregger, who explained that this film will be closely based on the Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 games. However, Cregger explained that his version will be closer to the 4th game (as someone who spent hours playing the games himself).
The entire plot of the Resident Evil video games consists of a survival horror genre, forcing players to survive zombie-inhabited environments. Throughout the Resident Evil world, the protagonists must escape the city after civilians are turned into zombies by a highly contagious virus. Therefore, each game within the franchise focuses mainly on exploration, puzzles, and combat. Thus, this may also appeal to people who enjoy The Last of Us.
With this specific adaptation starring Austin Noah Abrams (Paper Towns), Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country), and Zach Cherry (Severance), there is no doubt that this horror game adaptation will be out of the ordinary.
The Legend of Zelda (7th May 2027)
This upcoming recreation of the famous video game is an adventure-based world set in the fictitious kingdom of Hyrule. Throughout the video games, Link is made to explore and restore the land within Hyrule. He then has to rescue Princess Zelda, who has been abducted by an evil warlord king called Ganon.
It’s also rumoured that this specific adaptation will be reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda; Breath of the Wild.
Plus, this is now the third attempt at creating a movie based on the fictitious world. With both attempts from 2007 and 2015 falling through, hopefully third time is the charm for this production. With Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (Flora & Ulysses) and Bo Bragason (Renegade Nell) playing the main characters, it’s predicted that the team is focusing on casting more upcoming stars for the film.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (5th December 2025)
With the sequel to the 2023 supernatural horror, Five Nights at Freddy’s fans are transported to the Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza restaurant. In this adaptation, three ghost hunters are touring this restaurant with a security guard. Between them, they manage to awaken the Marionette, who is possessed by an evil spirit. As a result, the Marionette ends up attacking one of the ghost hunters.
With the cast including stars Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), Piper Rubio (For All Mankind), and Elizabeth Lail (You), there are actors for all the family to recognise and appreciate throughout these films.
