Looking for some thrilling spooky series to binge this October? Maybe you want true story horror or something comedy scary.

I suggest 5 unique scary shows off of Netflix that I believe more people should check out!

1) Stranger Things: Supernatural Mystery

Stranger Things is on Netflix and first aired to the public in July 2016. It is under the genres of sci-fi, drama, and horror, with a plot that unravels mystery.

When 12-year-old Will Byers goes missing, his friends team up with a telekinetic girl to find him. Meanwhile, his mom and the police chief are also investigating his disappearance separately and discover cover-ups by the government.

A third investigation is held by Will’s older brother Jonathan and his friend Nancy. Her friend also went missing, and the two teens secretly hunted the monster culprit on their own.

It is interesting to see the three parties uncover different parts of the mystery while being unaware of each other. The show is full of extreme danger and emotional drama. In addition to the supernatural horror, there is real people who stand against them and threaten their safety.

With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 91%, Stranger Things is popular for good reasons! I love the mix of horror and mystery. Like turning the pages of a book, the surprise of what happens next is exciting. It’s surely a binge-watch! I recommend it for teens and adults who enjoy a spooky mystery and don’t mind the mature scenes throughout.

2) Latin America Haunted

Latin America: Haunted is a five episode series released to Netflix in 2021. Similar to its English counterpart, Haunted, narrators sit down with friends and family to share their traumatic experiences with spiritual evil. While it does have less episodes, it is nonetheless well-done in its depiction of the unique stories.

The speech is completely in Spanish, so subtitles are recommended for those who don’t know it. I still used Spanish subtitles because I want to improve my understanding of the language. It is fun to enjoy genres in another culture and learn more about how they see the world.

I recommend it to people of Spanish/Latin culture, of course! I especially refer it to those who, like me, like horror so much that they expand to other cultures for tales.

3) 28 Days Haunted: Is it Proven?

This is a true horror series on Netflix about experimenting with the veil between the spiritual and our world. It’s been released on Netflix with 6 episodes featuring three teams of investigators.

The series begins by saying that Ed and Lorraine Warren, famous paranormal detectives of the past, supposedly found that it took them about 28 days each time they pierced the veil to the spiritual world. As they got closer to finding out what haunted a place and how to cleanse it, the spirits usually became more active and violent. They wanted to know if this method could work for other investigators but never got the chance to experiment.

A lot of people agree the show is staged, but that doesn’t take away from its entertainment. (Netflix)

Years later, their psychic research society and their son-in-law Tony Spera work on fulfilling their goals. He sends psychic teams to three separate places without telling them the location’s history. We follow their adventures as they contact the ghosts and attempt to rid the houses of evil.

I’m not sure how much of the horrors on camera were real, but it was fun to watch. The conflict drama set up between the team members was almost comical! I recommend it if you’re a big fan of paranormal YouTube channels which have similar adventures.

4) The Haunting of Hill House

The Haunting of Hill House aired on Netflix in 2018 and has ten hour-long episodes. The Shirley Jackson retelling has proved to be immensely popular, reaching an impressive 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. A broken family revisits their trauma in the haunted house they used to live in when younger. The secrets of that house and its demons are about to get exposed. Will the family heal and get closure?

I just started watching it myself, but it’s off to a good start. The story doesn’t start off with their whole life in the haunted house, raising curiosity as to what happened in between the flashbacks. The flashbacks also help build relationships between the main characters, such as why the oldest son is estranged from his father.

I only wish it could be more clear in the beginning as to who all the adult characters are. I was watching them go about their normal day business while not fully understanding who some of them were. How many siblings are there? I know I’ll figure it out as I watch more.

I highly recommend you watch it this weekend! It is an interesting horror series.

5) The Worst Witch: Halloween Comedy

Looking for something more light-hearted and kid-friendly? The Worst Witch is a comedic fantasy show about a school for young witches. Mildred Hubble (Bella Ramsey) doesn’t seem to have any family history of magic, yet she discovers her abilities through said school. The four seasons portray her and her friends as they cause chaos throughout the school years and even act out noble deeds.

There is no real horror in this show, only suspense and a little bit of fear. It is a very well-written story with heart-warming friendship moments. It is also apparently based on a book series, so those may be worth a read, too!

This show is for those who want to watch something more relaxing while still having spooky themes.

All of these shows are available on Netflix, perfect for a cosy night by the fire, or for a quick watch before heading out to Halloween parties! Happy spooky season everyone!
