Most of us are familiar with Kanye West’s infamous interruption of Taylor Swift’s 2009 VMAs speech, but nearly 11 years later, West brings the moment back to the public’s attention with additional commentary.

Having just won the award for Best Female Video at the 2009 VMAs for her music video ‘You Belong To Me’, Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech was cut short when Kanye West jumped on stage and took the mic from her: “Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, Imma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time…One of the best videos of all time!”

While many claimed to have spotted West drinking from a bottle of Hennessy that night, West claims to have been under the influence of something much stronger.

It was not until recently that West revealed the influence behind his actions on that night 11 years ago. Appearing on Nick Cannon’s podcast, Cannon’s Class, West states that he was directed by God to interrupt Swift’s speech, saying:

“If God ain’t want me to run on stage and say Beyoncé had the best video, he wouldn’t have sat me in the front row. I would’ve been sitting in the back and they would’ve made it the first award and he wouldn’t have made it so ridiculous, because I had never heard of this person before and ‘Single Ladies’ is one of the greatest videos of all time.”

Using God as rationale for his actions shouldn’t surprise anyone, so long as they are familiar with West’s weekly Sunday Services and his ninth album ‘Jesus Is King’. In fact, West has been open about his religious beliefs for quite some time now.

Despite crediting God for his actions that night, West shares that the first time he actually started reading the Bible was during a psychiatric hospitalization in 2016.

Picking up the Bible, he says, was also part of God’s influence in his life: “God has a calling on all of us and he uses us in different ways.”
