The heated tension unfolding in Westeros is back after two years. The anticipated third season of House of the Dragon is set to grace our television screens once again on June 21, 2026.

The captivating television show House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire & Blood, which is a prequel to the television series Game of Thrones.

Though the last two seasons had some unforgettable moments, I think a quick recap is necessary to best prepare us for the drama and tense battles unfolding in the third season.

A word of advice: if you are not caught up on the last two seasons of House of the Dragon, there will be spoilers ahead!

A Friendship Casted to the Flames

Season one of House of the Dragon introduces a 15-year-old Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock), daughter of King Viserys (Paddy Considine), and her burden of being born a woman.

King Viserys is desperate for an heir to the throne. Rhaenyra’s mother (Sian Brooke) did produce a male heir, but her mother and the baby passed away during labor.

Rhaenyra sought companionship in her closest friend, Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey). The two girls had a close friendship and relied on one another for support and comfort.

King Viserys is devastated at the loss of his wife and son. Without a male heir to announce, the crown would fall to his brother, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith).

Viserys fears the power that Daemon would have as King because he knows how impulsive and unpredictable his brother can be.

He deems Rhaenyra the heir to the Iron Throne, sparking controversy throughout Westeros as she becomes the first woman heir in Targaryen history.

King Viserys’ health began to decline after the death of his wife. The King’s closest allies reminded Viserys of his duties to the crown and urged him to seek out a new Queen.

Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), Alicent’s father, was the Hand to the King. This meant he was the King’s most trusted ally for guidance. Otto Hightower was calculating; he sought power and took advantage of Viserys’ trust, urging Viserys to marry his daughter.

The friendship between Rhaenyra and Alicent went up in flames after Rhaenyra felt betrayed by her best friend’s choice to marry her father.

Alicent later gives birth to Aegon II, the son that Viserys always wanted, which started the controversy of who should be named heir.

A Trail of Ash and Blood

As season one continues, there is a significant time jump. Viserys’ health continues to decline, and the tension between Rhaenyra’s (Emma D-Arcy) family and Alicent’s (Olivia Cooke) family continues to grow.

After both Daemon and Rhaenyra’s past marriages ended in death (Rhaenyra and Daemon arranged for Rhaenyra’s husband to fake his death so he could escape his duties), Daemon and Rhaenyra got married and ruled over Dragonstone.

King Viserys passes away in his sleep after a long and tiring health battle. On his deathbed, he speaks with Alicent, attempting to tell her the prophecy “Song of Ice and Fire.”

This prophecy is passed down to all of the Targaryen rulers, warning them that a Targaryen ruler will save humanity.

Alicent mistakes Viserys’ dying words. When he spoke of Aegon the Conqueror, she mistook it for her son Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), and deemed that the King’s dying wish was for his son to be heir, not Rhaenyra.

Rhaenyra sends her sons out to patrol and gather potential allies. Her son, Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault), was flying over Storm’s End on his dragon when he was pursued by Alicent’s son, Aemond (Ewan Mitchell).

Aemond relentlessly followed and antagonized Lucerys. The petty battle took a dark turn when Aemond’s dragon, Vhagar, took control of the situation and killed Lucerys and his dragon.

The death of her son was Rhaenyra’s final straw; a raging war had been provoked, and Rhaenyra wished for vengeance.

An Eye for an Eye

Season two begins ten days after the tragic loss of Rhaenyra’s son, Lucerys. Daemon sought out revenge, so he snuck into King’s Landing and ordered the assassination of Alicent’s son, Aemond.

The hired men were given simple instructions to kill the Prince. When the two rogues entered the royal apartments and were unable to find Prince Aemond, they instead killed King Aegon II and Queen Helaena’s (Phia Saban) infant son, Jaehaerys.

Any hope for a peaceful war ended with this mistake. The war had been intensified as both sides now had bloodshed and betrayal. King Aegon used this horrific death as a tactic to get the citizens of King’s Landing to turn on Rhaenyra.

Rhaenyra is devastated from the loss of her son and is horrified by the news that Daemon ordered the assasination of Jaehaerys.

Daemon craves the power of the throne and decides to take matters into his own hands. He leaves Dragonstone and heads out to Harrenhal, where he plans to seize control and bring back an army.

During his time at Harrenhal, Daemon meets Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin), a seductive and spiritual woman who makes Daemon question his sanity as he is shown strange visions.

Daemon is shown visions of the future involving the “Song of Ice and Fire,” which is a direct reference to the events that unfold in Game of Thrones.

After Daemon saw the future, he began to respect Rhaenyra as the rightful Queen of the Iron Throne. He pledged his loyalty and granted Rhaenyra an army from Harrenhal.

The Battle of Rook’s Rest

An intense battle occurs, Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best), known as “The Queen Who Never Was,” flies off to battle on her dragon, Meleys. She is up against Prince Aemond and his army.

King Aegon grows restless as everyone continues to fight his battles while he must stay out of harm’s way. He leaves King’s Landing and recklessly joins the battle as well.

Rhaenys and Aegon are in an intense battle when suddenly Aemond and his dragon appear. Aegon is relieved to see his brother coming to his aid as he struggles against Rhaenys.

Aegon’s relief is short-lived as Aemond commands his dragon’s fire directly towards Aegon.

Aegon and his dragon, Sunfyre, plummet to the ground. The King is severely burned and nearly killed as his body lies crippled beside his dragon.

Rhaenys puts up a fierce fight, but Aemond’s dragon clamps down hard on Meleys’ neck and kills her. Rhaenys accepts her fate, and she falls to her death.

While Aegon is incapacitated from his severe burns, Aemond takes control and becomes the Prince Regent during the King’s absence. His ruling is brutal and strict; he uses fear to keep the people of King’s Landing in line.

The Looming War

As Aemond continues to grow his allies through fear, Rhaenyra makes a bold choice and begins searching for Targaryen bastards that are fit to ride a dragon. This daring decision is dangerous and results in many casualties.

Though it was a risky plan, Rhaenyra was able to recruit three men with Targaryen blood that the dragons accepted.

The rumors of Rhaenyra claiming more dragon riders spread to King’s Landing, where Aemond is furious that she continues to grow allies.

To avoid more bloodshed, Alicent throws in a white flag and secretly meets Rhaenyra. Alicent devises a plan for Rhaenyra to win over King’s Landing and avoid any more harm to either family.

While Rhaenyra and Alicent devised their plans, unknowingly, Aegon flees King’s Landing with the assistance of Larys Strong (Matthew Needham). Larys fears for Aegon’s safety and knows that in his weakened state, he will not survive the growing war.

Season two ends with Rhaenyra and Daemon gathering their allies and armies, ready to end the war and claim her rightful seat on the Iron Throne.

Now, before we move on to the next segment of this article, it is important to note that I did my best to avoid major spoilers, but there will be some minor spoilers ahead.

Dance of the Dragons

The trailer for season three of House of the Dragon reveals a different side of Rhaenyra that may be unexpected from the previous seasons.

The power of the Iron Throne can lure in greed and desperation, which is portrayed in the trailer as Rhaenyra clings to the power she gains.

Desperate to maintain the throne that she fought for, Rhaenyra appears to lose herself; she is more intense and does not shy away from bloodshed this time around.

Season three is preparing to bring out bloody battles with many casualties. In George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire & Blood, the Dance of the Dragons war is brutal and unforgiving.

House of the Dragon has followed an accurate timeline with Martin’s book, Fire & Blood. If the television show continues to follow the timeline, then one of the next major battles will be the Battle of the Gullet.

This battle is known throughout Westeros as the bloodiest naval battle in history.

A blockade instilled by Rhaenyra had been preventing vital resources from entering King’s Landing, and in retaliation, a coordinated ambush against the Velaryons left a bloodbath in its wake.

The Iron Throne

House of the Dragon is nearing its end. After the release of season three, there is only one final fourth season to wrap up the battle between the dragons.

While Game of Thrones played out for eight seasons, House of the Dragon is significantly shorter due to the outcome of the events in Fire & Blood. The book leaves few survivors in the aftermath of the war.

King Aegon escaped King’s Landing before Rhaenyra took the reins. After she storms King’s Landing and takes hold of the Iron Throne, she captures Alicent and imprisons or executes any subjects who are still royal to Aegon.

Rhaenyra struggles to maintain power of the throne; she becomes paranoid, creating tension between herself and the citizens. Angry mobs attack the Dragonpit in retaliation and leave Rhaenyra vulnerable.

She is forced to flee King’s Landing, abandoning the hard work and years of planning and dedication to the Iron Throne.

Season three of House of the Dragon prepares to bring a story full of bloodshed and betrayal. The fuming war is unforgiving and brings out the darkest sides of everyone involved.

Will Rhaenyra be able to maintain her new power on the throne, or will Aegon conquer and take back his crown?

Don’t miss out on the Dance of the Dragon’s war that is unfolding in Westeros.
