Young Miko, born María Victoria Ramírez de Arellano Cardona, is a 28-year-old Puerto Rican artist.
This past year, she’s been widely reaching the Western media, such as her collaboration with Gap. With her unique background, Young Miko shows how success with authenticity is possible.
The rise of Young Miko
Young Miko is known for her reggaeton and Latin trap sound, along with her “Spanglish” bold, expressive lyrics. She’s relatively new to the music scene but has already become one of the biggest Latin artists. Miko released her first songs on SoundCloud in 2018. After the release of her first EP, Trap Kitty, in 2022, Miko was already on a rapid road to global success. Around the time of Trap Kitty’s release, Bad Bunny brought her on stage to perform her iconic single “Riri”.
A year later, Miko opened for Karol G’s tour in the United States. Thanks to this tour, this viral moment was created and remains an iconic era among fans, aka Mikosexuals.
Miko is the queen of collaborations, having worked with artists like Bad Bunny, KAROL G, Feid, KATSEYE, Bad Gyal, J Balvin, Central Cee, and many more. At the beginning of 2024, Coachella announced Miko as a performer, before she’d even released an album. With her Grammy-nominated debut album att (abbreviation for atentamente, Spanish for “sincerely”), Miko went on her first tour in the United States and Latin America.
Her latest album, Do Not Disturb, was released at the end of 2025, and soon we saw her in the viral Gap commercial with the album’s lead single WASSUP.

Miko is one of the biggest Latin artists, but has had limited exposure in the Western media. For non-Spanish speakers, it might seem difficult to get to know her and become a fan. I, too, only found Miko when she collaborated on KATSEYE’S Gabriela and opened for Billie Eilish in November of 2025. But ever since that day, I’ve become a huge fan of Miko, constantly streaming her songs and watching interviews with English subtitles, while visiting Duolingo daily. As an English-speaking fan, I’m here to introduce you to Young Miko, her roots, inspirations, and her rare, incredible status in the music industry.
Young Miko’s artistic background
Ever since childhood, Miko has been a creative. She’s dipped in all kinds of art forms: poetry, drawing, design, graffiti art (legally), and fashion. While studying visual arts in college, she worked as a tattoo artist. Her goal was to save that money to fund the start of her music career. Once she graduated, she went full into music and never looked back.
Her masculine-presenting style and bubbly personality complement each other. Before the rebrand to the dark Do Not Disturb era, Miko often wore bright, colourful outfits. In 2023, she bleached her hair blonde and later cut it much shorter. She likes hiding it with extensions, though the fans love the short hair. She switches her style up often, but maintains a unique authenticity that still screams “Miko”.
Young Miko has always known who she is
Confidence is what immediately stands out about Young Miko, and what’s inspiring is that she’s been like that from day one. After releasing a few tracks on SoundCloud, the Covid pandemic hit. She didn’t release any music during the pandemic, but was recording up to four songs a day. She allowed herself space to get to know herself without rushing to release music ASAP.

An example of a sustainable career in music
I find it really fascinating that Miko has managed to get so huge in music while keeping a management team of close friends and complete creative freedom.
Her team consists of friends she’s known since childhood. Miko and her manager Mari used to play football together for years. That’s where they learned the importance of teamwork and two-way support, and brought that into the music industry.

Mauro, Miko’s producer, is the only person with her in the studio. Except for Naila, Miko’s dog. Wherever you see Miko, you’ll probably see Mauro. These two basically share the same brain cell. Once, Mauro wrote a whole song, and Miko loved it so much that she didn’t change a thing.
The music industry is always moving rapidly. It’s easy to feel like you’re losing control over the constant movement. Miko, however, doesn’t worry about this. She and her team regularly sit down to plan the near future, making sure everyone’s schedules align. Everything is always in balance.
The thing that’s difficult as an artist in the music industry is that it becomes your whole life, especially for young girl groups and boy bands. They get put out into the world and are supposed to follow a schedule that’s planned without their own preferences in mind. Most of the time, they don’t know the next time they’ll be home.
Miko is an example of how surrounding yourself with people who truly know your heart and intentions translates to a healthy and successful work environment. She’s had people who make her feel ‘very much like Vicky’ since day one. Miko even has a song called “pinot grigio” that talks about celebrating success with the teamwork of friends.
Redefining the industry
Reggaeton and Latin trap are male-centered genres with political roots and a history of misogyny. Miko, being unapologetically queer in every way, is redefining the genre. She constantly expresses the importance of LGBTQ+ rights in interviews, but in her music, she just talks about her own life.

It is important to talk about topics such as queer rights, politics, and misogyny. But it’s also powerful to see a lesbian artist living her life like any other person, not trying to defend herself. You know how the LGBTQ+ community has been asking for movies and TV shows that don’t centre around suffering, homophobia, or coming out? Heterosexual couples have a wide range of relationship themes, while queer couples are often shown in tragic storylines.
People want to see queer people just exist. I believe Miko is just that for music. Young Miko’s intention at the end of the day is to create a space for women to express themselves freely or simply vibe with the beat.
When The Hollywood Reporter asked how she feels being a queer Latina artist in a genre mainly led by heterosexual males, Miko said she doesn’t even think about it. She sees it as a superpower.
Still, Miko knows advocating for the LGBTQ+ community is important, as she had unaccepting parents at first. They took her to church and therapy after she came out. Eventually, they accepted her, and she still has a very loving, close relationship with her parents.

I believe Miko’s authentic nature, inner security, and the sense of not feeling like she has to prove anything come from the way she grew up.
- Miko grew up in Añasco, Puerto Rico. She spent her childhood outside in nature, being the only girl among the neighbor boys. Her Puerto Rican culture inspires and is at the origin of everything she does. It impacts her music, the way she talks, the slang she uses, and the food she eats.
- When Miko is recording music, she loves having a view of nature. She craves nature to feel grounded. If she gets a creative block, she goes to the park or to see the water. “Touch grass”, if you will. She even has a big window in her built-in recording studio at home.
- Miko loves being around friends and family. She’s always falling in love with herself and her surroundings. Even after fame, the foundation of her life hasn’t changed.
- She’s an overachiever. Her discipline likely comes from years of playing for the Puerto Rican women’s national soccer team. She’s determined to look back and be able to say she did everything she wanted and squeezed everything she could out of this life.
- Miko is an astrology girlie, heavily identifying with being a Scorpio. Her latest album, Do Not Disturb, is very Scorpio-coded. She says her Scorpio traits, especially the vulnerability, help with songwriting and being open in songs.
- All of her tattoos have meanings because she doesn’t do anything without intention. She trusts people easily and wears her heart on her sleeve. Miko’s dragon tattoo on her back “protects” her in that way.
- Even though her music is similar to Tainy, Rauw Alejandro, and Feid, Miko loves Justin Bieber and would love to work with Doja Cat.
Fans can always expect the unexpected
And that’s why being a Young Miko fan is fun. You never know what you’re gonna get. Her love for people, her spontaneity, and creativity constantly keep fans entertained, bringing unexpected surprises. She is the definition of authenticity, which is what today’s music fans yearn for. With fandoms being so toxic lately, being a fan of Young Miko has been so refreshing.
As Young Miko continues to gain more exposure in the Western media, maybe we’ll get more interviews and English-language content. However, I appreciate how loyal she is to her native language. She inspires me and other fans to learn Spanish. Some parts of an artist can only really be understood in their own language.
So far, Young Miko’s plan for 2026 is to perform at festivals across Europe and the United States. We don’t know much else about the rest of the year. But from the recent patterns: the Gap commercial, the Garnier collaboration, and showing up in the background of Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl performance, it’s clear that Miko likes surprising us. She, herself, says the fans can expect a lot in 2026, since she never knows how to stay still.
