He made his debut appearance in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. Since then, the iconic caped crusader has become a recognizable face throughout the DC universe.
The infamous Dark Knight has grown in popularity over the years. What started as a seemingly dull and plain billionaire in Detective Comics #27 revealed a much deeper and more complex character.
While Batman’s (aka Bruce Wayne) introduction began with a comic book, he has now become a mainstream hero. Movies, cartoons, video games, and toys – you name it, The Dark Knight has it!
Though Batman has been a recognizable and beloved character for many years, it appears that 2026 is the year for the Caped Crusader. DC has announced various Batman-related projects planned for 2026 and beyond. Let’s take a look at what is in store for Gotham’s Protector.
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight
The anticipated open-world video game released on May 22, 2026. Fans have praised the LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight for its detailed gameplay and stunning visuals as Batman glides through Gotham City and takes down bad guys.
Players are able to take on the roles of Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Jim Gordon, Catwoman, and Talia al Ghul.
Along with the various characters that gamers are able to play, the LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight also pays tribute to various Batman references throughout the years with hidden details and costumes.
There are over 100 outfits that you can unlocked for Batman and the other characters. This includes Absolute Batman, The Dark Knight, Arkham Asylum, Batman ‘89, and a variety of other iconic suits.
Fans praise LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight for taking inspiration and having similar features to the popular Arkham Asylum trilogy games (Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and Arkham Knight) that started releasing in 2009.
Both the LEGO Batman and the three games within the Batman Arkham games have similar combat maneuvers, open-world exploration, and hidden easter eggs throughout the games.
Batman: Caped Crusader
Season two of Batman: Caped Crusader premieres on July 31, 2026. Fans are eager to see the 1940’s noir aesthetic series back on Amazon Prime Video.
Season one followed Batman (Hamish Linklater) as he took down mob groups and attempted to keep corruption out of Gotham during Harvey Dent’s mayoral campaign.
The series had many memorable villains such as Two-Face (Diedrich Bader), Catwoman (Christina Ricci), Clayface (Dan Donohue), and a gender-swapped Penguin (Minnie Driver).
There are also many characters returning to the series to assist Batman on his mission of justice. The fans will see allies like Alfred Pennyworth (Jason Watkins), Barbara Gordon (Krystal Joy Brown), and Harley Quinn (Jamie Chung) coming to his aid against the growing threats in Gotham.
The trailer for season two reveals some of the featured villains like Riddler, Poison Ivy, Joker (John DiMaggio), Man-Bat, Soloman Grundy, and a gender-swapped Mad Hatter.
At the end of season one, the Joker emerges with a more prominent role and promises to “show Batman who he really is.”
Batman must deal with public hate and uncertainty from the citizens of Gotham, and prove that he can take down the growing threats in Gotham.
Clayface
The official trailer for Clayface dropped on April 22, 2026, and this body-horror film releases on October 23, 2026. Though Clayface is not specifically about Batman, Clayface is a major villain in Gotham and a popular and recurring enemy for him to take down.
Clayface debuted in DC’s Detective Comics #40 in 1940, where the make-up man on the set of a movie film disguised himself and murdered multiple of the actors.
Though this original depiction does not seem to be the route the Clayface film will follow. Instead, the trailer reveals a similar plot to the origins of Clayface from Batman: The Animated Series.
In the two-part episode that aired in 1992, Matt Hagen is a famous actor who suffers a severe accident that leaves his once handsome face disfigured.
To ensure he can still lead his glorious life in acting, Matt becomes addicted to a facial cream called Renuyu from Daggett Laboratories that reforms his face.
The addiction eventually leads Matt down a dark path, seeking more Renuyu. He breaks into Daggett Laboratories to steal the cream, but instead he is ambushed and the assailants pour an entire vat of the cream on him.
Instead of dying, the cream transforms his entire body into a clay-like substance, allowing him to take on the form of anyone.
Batman: Knightfall Part One
DC fans are thrilled after the animated film Batman: Knightfall trailer released on June 23, 2026, which is based on the comic book Batman: Knightfall.
The film does not have a set release date yet, but it has been confirmed that the series will be rated R. Fans are eager to see the brutal and dark comic book brought to life on their television screens.
In the comic book, an orchestrated breakout at Arkham Asylum unfolds, and it is up to Batman to get the villains under control again.
This comic book series features many memorable DC villains such as Joker, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, and the infamous villain Bane, who becomes known as “the man who broke the Bat.”
Batman has a near-death encounter with Bane that leaves him recovering from a broken spine. He entrusts Jean-Paul Valley, the vigilante known as Azrael, to protect Gotham in his absence.
Azrael’s methods do not align with Batman’s. The vigilante taints the Caped Crusader’s image as he is more brutal and enforces lethal blows to Gotham’s criminals.
Batman is forced to undergo intense training so he can take down Azrael and prove he is the one and only protector of Gotham.
The Batman Part Two
Though The Batman Part 2 will not release until February 2028, there have still been many updates and details teased in 2026 for this film.
Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as Batman. The audience will also see Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright), and The Penguin (Colin Farrell) reprising their roles.
The director, Matt Reeves, posted behind the scenes photos while shooting The Batman Part 2, where the fans can see a snow covered Gotham set.
There is speculation that The Batman Part 2 may follow the comic book, Batman: The Long Halloween. A string of murders begins on Halloween, and the killer only strikes on holidays. This comic book involves various characters, including Holiday Killer, Poison Ivy, Two-Face, Joker, Carmine Falcone, and many others.
Fans are also hoping to see a prominent villainous organization in Gotham known as the Court of Owls. This is only a theory within the DC fandom, though many fans pointed out possible easter eggs connecting the Court of Owls to the next film.
Dynamic Duo
James Gunn announced an animated film about Dick Grayson and Jason Todd will be released sometime in 2028. Though the project is far away, fans are thrilled to see their favorite duos appearing together in their own featured film.
There isn’t much information about what fans can expect from Dynamic Duo, but it is important to know the characters’ backstories.
Richard (Dick) Grayson, aka Nightwing, was Batman’s first sidekick. After Dick’s parents both tragically died while performing at Haly’s Circus, Bruce Wayne adopts Dick and trains him to become his sidekick.
Dick takes on the role of Robin for many years before he finally decides he does not want to live his life in Batman’s shadow, so he takes on the new persona of Nightwing.
Jason Todd, aka Red Hood, took on the mantle and became Robin after Batman caught Jason attempting to steal the wheels off the Batmobile. He is a rebellious child, and Batman has many issues keeping Jason in line.
The rebellious and spontaneous spirit eventually leads to Jason’s downfall as he is kidnapped and killed by the Joker. Ra’s al Ghul steals Jason’s body and brings him back to life with the Lazarus Pit.
Jason becomes more brutal and violent after he is resurrected. He drops the Robin persona and becomes Red Hood, a vigilante who takes down the corruption within Gotham with force.
The Legacy of The Batman Continues
