Frederick Joseph, an activist from New York, has started a GoFundMe campaign to allow disadvantaged children in Harlem to see the up-and-coming Marvel Film Black Panther.

Black Panther is set to become one of the most successful Marvel films after the ticket pre-sales. The new installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has to sell more advance tickets than any other Marvel film, overtaking Captain America: Civil War for the top spot.

Chief of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, has said that “90% of the cast is either African or African-American.” Joseph stated the release of the film “is a rare opportunity”. Others, including TheRoot.com writer Clarkisha Kent, have been talking about how “Black Panther remains socially and culturally relevant”. The film shows “black people continually triumph over the influences of capitalism, Western imperialism, and white supremacy.”

The campaign has far exceeded its $10,000 goal, coming up to almost $35,000. Joseph initially had a framework of how much all the tickets and refreshments would be. For 300 children at ‘The Boys and Girls Club of Harlem’ and their chaperones. Joseph has also stated on his Twitter how they reached their $10K goal thanks to Katie McGrath and her husband JJ Abrams. Therefore, with the overwhelming support, Frederick has stated his intentions to make the project national and provide more children with the opportunity to see the film. Otherwise, the extra $25,000 will go straight to BGCHarlem.

Should the money be spent on a Marvel cinema trip?

The campaign has received some criticism that seeing a violent superhero film is not good for children. However, Frederick Joseph has always remained behind the campaign. He commented, “This representation is truly fundamental for young people, especially those who are often underserved, unprivileged, and marginalized”.
