By now, Hamilton is a Broadway juggernaut that needs no introduction. The award-winning musical has not only become one of the most protifable musical theatre pieces of all time, but inspired an entire online fan community dedicated to creating and discussing fan works. The latest in the never-ending Hamilton internet craze comes in the form of @ambernicoleardolino; an ensemble member who’s started taking suggestions from TikTok for her onstage dances.
In a series of (now deleted) TikToks, Amber Ardolino shared the various viral dances she brought to the stage with each new performance of the hit musical. Ranging from the worm, to twerking, to the infamous Camp Rock march/chant, Ardolino did it all.
The opportunity for such unique inspiration presented itself in the form of the Hamilton number ‘The Reynolds Pamphlet’, in which the details of the titular Alexander Hamilton’s affair are published for the world to see. The ensemble dancers are given creative liberty with their performances in certain sections, with many improvising their own dance moves.
The series of TikToks garnered much online attention with thousands of views. However, in a twist of fate, the series was wiped from the face of the app on Wednesday 1st December.
Why were they deleted?
There are a number of rumours circulating regarding the plight of the series, which Ardolino has neither confirmed nor denied. Some TikTok commenters claim they were deleted after a fellow Hamilton star complained about the video footage shared of performances.
Despite everything, Ardolino seems confident the series will make its rightful return one day:
Though this has sparked an ethical debate regarding such content. Is it fair that online creators get to post video footage of live musical performances (something often looked down on in professional circles)? Or is stifling such content just putting a needless damper on harmless fun?
