You are certainly cautious of a potential shark attack while surfing, or protecting your campsite from a bear invasion. What about a wild bear pursuit while skiing? On January 23rd, an anonymous skier on the Predeal Mountain Resort’s slopes in Brasov County was ensconced in this terrifying chase while flying down the mountain.
As the onlookers cheered and whistled in an effort to get the bear’s attention, the brown bear’s persistence remained firmly set on the skier. With limited options on how to lead the bear off its set path, and the distance shortening by the seconds, the skier chose to toss his backpack.
In the hopes of distracting the animal, the plan paid off! As the skier safely glided to the bottom of the mountain, the bear diverted his attention to the fallen backpack. This could have been the reason the bear was chasing the skier the entire time!
“The skier did the right thing,” a spokesperson of the Romanian police, Ion Zaharia, informed ABC News. “The bear was distracted by the things in his backpack.”
Brasov County has been seeing this occurrence, bear’s chasing after unsuspecting skiers, more often in recent winters. This bear should have been hibernating, and this was actually the third bear sighting that day.
The bear will be relocated back to its habitat, and thankfully the skier remains safe, if not a little shaken! Remember, when you are in the mountains, try to keep the food on your person as limited as possible.
