The coronavirus has put the NBA on hold for now, but World Chase Tag is here for the watching. This international game of competitive chasing and tagging has racked up over 400 million views on its YouTube channel. It may remind you of your youth, but there is no squealing or giggling on this playground… just a ton of testosterone and the potential for a broken jaw.
World Chase Tag was created in 2011 by two brothers, Chris and Damien Devaux, who apparently really missed recess.
The game is just what it sounds like. There’s a “chaser” and an “evader.” To win, the chaser either successfully tags the evader, or the evader manages to stay out of reach for 20 seconds. “20 seconds, that’s nothing!” you scoff? Try running at top speed on an obstacle course called “The Quad,” which consists of different levels to jump over and under and bars to catapult yourself off of. Every moment becomes an opportunity for injury.
Featured on ESPN, the BBC, and FOX Sports, the sport also boasts a rabid fan base addicted to its YouTube channel. The league runs competitions around the globe, from Philadelphia to Mumbai, holding different style matches with names like “SINGLES SUDDEN DEATH CHASE OFF™”
Do you wish your monkey bar skills amounted to something more in your adult life? Does the imminent threat of a broken neck turn you on? This bizarre but extreme game wants you when quarantine is over. World Chase Tag recruits new players on their website. Soon you could be throwing around lingo like “Chaser Plate” (where the Chaser starts the game), and “EQ” (Evasion Quality).
There have been no confirmed deaths as of yet, but if you’re curious, head here to watch some of the best fails and worst injuries.
