Justin Trudeau Corrects Woman: “It’s Peoplekind”

Going to be feeling that one for a while.

The Trudeau Follies/YouTube

Justin Trudeau, prime minister of Canada, is quite the social justice hero. Trudeau works hard to support many causes and remains a prominent figure in societal issues. At his latest town-hall-style meeting, however, he may have gone just a tad too far.

Video footage was recently released showing Trudeau correcting a woman for using the term “mankind”. Before she even finishes asking her question, Trudeau interrupts the woman, “We like to say ‘people kind’.” Watch the cringe-worthy moment below.

While the lady seems to not be bothered and the crowd cheers after the correction, Trudeau has come under criticism for his words.

Firstly, the woman’s question dealt with the serious matter of funding religious groups in Canada. She was nowhere near the touchy subjects of gender, sexism, and language formalities, yet Trudeau felt the need to stop her speech and interrupt.

Further, “mankind” has always been taken to assume women are included within that grouping, and it is not an exclusive phrase by any means. For Trudeau to cut off a spectator, embarrass her, and input his own remarks is rather inappropriate. The meeting was town-hall style and back-and-forth discourse was expected. The manner in which Trudeau went about addressing his constituent, however, was rather tasteless.

Many have taken to Twitter to voice their annoyance and – as always – create memes.

Perhaps Trudeau simply made a poor judgment call? We all make mistakes…let’s forgive the guy and move on. He already has a lot on his plate what with changing the Canadian national anthem – in place for 79 years – to be gender neutral.
