Joe Rogan, host of the podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience” recently made headlines after signing a huge deal with the popular streaming service Spotify.
His podcast is among the most, if not the most, popular ones around. He’s hosted a wide variety of guests including Elon Musk, Mike Tyson, Robert Downey Jr, and many many more.
He announced news of this deal over Instagram in a video post stating, “It[the show] will remain free, and it will be the exact same show… Spotify won’t have any creative control over the show.” As a result of this deal, his whole library of content will shift over to Spotify exclusively. His statement should set many fans at ease. His show will remain unchanged and he’ll continue to draw people in and retain the fans he’s gained over the years.
This news drew a mostly positive response from fans. It appears the most common gripe is that many were attached to the video episode of the podcasts and are understandably upset to see that they’ve been set slightly aside in preference for Spotify’s largely audio-based format. However, if these very same fans had listened all the way through the video announcement they would’ve heard Rogan mention that the video version will also be present through Spotify. This news adds a new dimension to the streaming service in that videos, especially long videos such as the near-hour long podcast episodes were a fairly rare sight on the platform.
There are many different speculations on just why he decided to take this deal. Some believe that he had a falling out with Apple. I feel it’s much more likely that the price tag on the deal was much more enticing.
These changes are set to be put in place in the fall, September first specifically. When this happens, Rogan’s podcast will only be available in full on Spotify however, video clips of the program will be made available on youtube continuously despite the deal.
As a new listener to this podcast myself, I’m indifferent about this change because I often flip between podcast streaming services to listen to my own favorite podcasts.
Podcasts are great for killing time especially on flights, maybe a flight to Japan even(when all this COVID news becomes resolved of course) If you’re making post-COVID travel plans, here’s a list of things to do in Japan, by Trill Staff
