On Thursday, Elon Musk revealed Tesla’s very first truck: the “Cybertruck”. And while the electric pickup sounds promising, the truck itself is… well, let’s just say nothing less would be expected from Elon Musk.
The launch for the “Cybertruck” even had an accident. Metal balls were shot at the car to prove the durability of the windows. Instead, two of the “unbreakable” glass windows shattered on stage in front of everyone. Since Thursday, Tesla shares have dropped by 6%, and Elon Musk’s net worth has dropped by over three-quarters of a million dollars.
Despite this embarrassment, Musk claimed on Twitter that Tesla has received close to 150k orders already, without any advertising or paid endorsements. He has acknowledged that the look isn’t for everyone, and it’s true; the truck looks futuristic and nothing like the traditional pickup that Americans know and love.
Production is due to start in late 2021, so it will be a while before people are able to get their hands on this car. Right now, it is hard to say how successful it will be. It sounds promising, but it’s hard to get past the design; while it was said to be based off James Bond’s car, people are comparing it to the DeLorean from Back to the Future.
So will the streets be filled with futuristic electric cars such as this one in a couple years? Only time will tell. The one thing we do know for sure is that Elon Musk will always be keeping us on our toes. Remember when he was selling flamethrowers? Yeah, that was only last year.
