The kiteboarder, Andrei Grigoriev, captures on video his brief but startling interaction with the enormous animal.

Thankfully, the whale didn’t seem to mind all that much, and Grigoriev was unharmed. Still, his experience is a powerful reminder of the ocean’s immensity and mystery. Who knows what could be beneath us as we swim or surf.
