The all-female, Madrid-based Rayo Vallecano Femenino branch of the Rayo Vallecano football club has spoken out after their post-game meal consisted of nothing but a frugal ham sandwich.
The sandwich consisted of two slices of bread, and four pieces of ham- no butter, no extras.
Journalist Irati Vidal tweeted out a photo of the meal, highlighting the hypocritical double standards of the team’s treatment.
The frankly pathetic post-match snack came as the final straw which marked the need for change.
The team had a rocky history with their club preceding sandwichgate, with many reporting late wages, and overall worse treatment when compared to their male counterparts.
The team has a long history of success since its inception in 2000, having brought home three national championships and one national cup in the space of three years.
The club maintain that there was nothing wrong with the sandwich the team were given, and that doctors had approved it as a nutritionally sufficient post-game meal.
Others, however, find this harder to believe. José Ángel Pozo, current player for the Rayo Vallenco male team, criticised the club’s actions, claiming that the food provided to the women’s team was nowhere near sufficient for a child, let alone a team of professional athletes.
The world of sports continues to change every year, however, sadly it seems there’s still a long way to go.
