It started with Chlöe Swarbrick’s “OK boomer” moment in the New Zealand parliament and now we have Biggie Smalls being quoted at Trump’s impeachment.
Okay, it didn’t actually start with Chlöe Swarbrick backhanding a boomer. Hakeem Jeffries has been paying tribute to the late rapper since at least 2017. Billboard compiled a list of all of the references that they could find.
This particular reference came as a response when Trump’s defence asked the question, “Why are we here?”.
If you’re high-flying lifestyle prevents you from watching the video, the response is as follows:
“We are here, sir, because President Trump pressured a foreign government to target an American citizen for political and personal gain. We are here, sir, because President Trump solicited foreign interference in the 2020 election and corrupted our democracy.
And we are here, sir, to follow the facts, follow the law, be guided by the Constitution, and present the truth to the American people. That is why we are here, Mr. Sekulow. If you don’t know, now you know.“
It’s that last line, “If you don’t know, now you know” that references Biggie and it comes from Juicy. Again, this isn’t the first time that Jeffries has quoted The Notorious B.I.G. Notably, he quoted from Juicy for the 20th anniversary of Biggie’s death. Deathiversary?
It seems that Jeffries isn’t just doing this to be cool or to win brownie points voters. Biggie grew up in Clinton Hill, part of Jeffries 8th district and he seems to be genuinely inspired by his music and lyrics.
Would you look at that! A politician who doesn’t appear to be using pop culture just to show that they’re “down with the kids”. Who woulda thunk?
The Huffington Post referred to it as a “mic drop moment” and when you watch the video, it’s pretty worthy of dropping a perfectly good microphone. Trump’s impeachment hearings continue, making him the third president in US history to actually be impeached. Maybe Biggie will be watching over the proceedings from his gangster’s paradise in the sky. (Yes, I know Gangster’s Paradise is Coolio’s song – but it works.)
