Agreement Between Iran and the U.S. to Start Peace Negotiations

The U.S. plans to pass a memorandum today with Iran. There have been mixed feelings about the agreement from Iranian officials.

The memorandum of understanding proposed by the United States has recently been released. Iran has agreed to stop its nuclear proliferation in the memorandum. U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that the agreement will be signed today.

The memorandum proposed by the United States includes a variety of issues such as opening the straight of Hormuz and that Tehran agrees to neither produce nor acquire nuclear weapons. Multiple sources have stated that Iran has agreed on to stop the creation and obtainment of nuclear weapons.

Despite this hopeful statement, Iran is still hesitant about the memorandum as a whole. On a Truth Social post, Trump was confident that an agreement will be made today. However, Iran has still not made a decision on the proposed memorandum and has expressed pushback against certain aspects of it.

There has also been continued strikes from Israel on Beirut today. Attacks such as these have previously caused Iran to launch strikes on Israel, making a U.S.-Iran understanding even harder to achieve.

Yesterday, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that Iran would not sign an agreement Sunday and criticized Trumps sudden timeline for the agreement.

Trump is still set on holding the agreement later today. Qatari officials are now in Iran to help mediate the agreement. As the current memorandum stands, it will not end the war with Iran, but create opportunities for further negotiation.

The agreed memorandum of understanding

As promised, Iran and the U.S. signed an agreement on Sunday. After various concerns about the potential signing, both parties agreed to its terms. The agreement is set to start on Friday. However, the memorandum of understanding is not an end to the Iran-U.S. conflict. The agreement is a framework for further peace negotiations during a 60 day ceasefire.

Both Iran and the U.S. have announced the success of the agreement. However, the official memorandum has not been released yet. The 60 day ceasefire has been confirmed by both countries, but President Trump also announced other components of the agreement.

On a social media post, Trump stated, “Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!” Trump announced that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz was a part of the agreement signed on Sunday.

Trump also claimed that the strait would become “permanently toll free.” However, Iranian officials denied that statement on Monday saying there will be fees after the ceasefire.

The inconsistent information given by the U.S. and Iran has created concern about the agreement. There has also been misunderstandings between the two countries about what will happen after the ceasefire starts on Friday. Iranian officials claimed the US will release its frozen funds to start the negotiations, but Washington denied this statement.

Future negotiation concerns

Despite the emphasis on Iran’s nuclear program, an agreement on this was not made in the memorandum. Negotiations on Tehran’s enriched uranium will continue during the 60 day ceasefire period.

Iran has been concerned with Israeli attacks in Lebanon which has made a U.S. agreement difficult. Iranian officials stated that the agreement should stop military attacks on all fronts, including Lebanon. However, Israel was not a part of the official memorandum negotiations. This has caused Israel to decrease its attacks on Lebanon, but has not stopped them completely.

Both of these concerns have been voiced throughout the Iran-U.S. conflict and will be driving forces in the negotiations starting Friday.
