Western New York has been bombarded with wild blizzards this week in a storm which the National Weather Service called a ‘monster’.
Some areas saw over twenty-eight inches of snow and experienced winds of up to sixty miles per hour. Despite the tumultuous weather, it has led to some picturesque scenes as houses were completely frozen over. As long as it wasn’t your house that is.
Houses near the shore of Lake Erie, Hamburg were covered in ice, leading to comparisons with Narnia, Frozen and any other snow related franchise you can imagine. Take a look at a couple of the pictures:
The brutal winds whipped up the waves on the lake which blasted onto shore soaking the houses. Due to the freezing temperatures, the houses were quickly encased in ice. The gusty winds brought waves of more than ten feet high. Local officials have asked for more government money to try and defend homes against these terrifying conditions in future.
Despite the fairy tale like images, local residents have described the terror they felt as they were trapped inside their homes. The sheer weight of the ice stopped many from being able to open doors and windows to escape. One local resident, Ed Mis, described how he had to chip his way out. There are concerns that once the ice thaws there could be major structural damage to some homes. The storm also led to disruption on roads, with multiple accidents occurring as a result of the storms.
Whilst the images are gorgeous, it is important to not forget the impact on people’s lives. Let’s hope that everything goes back to normal for these residents very shortly.
