Up to the end of March, Scott Miller lived with his 76-year old mother, Norma, and her 69-year old partner in Edinburgh. Then, on the 21st on March, Norma was taken to the hospital after a fall. While there, she tested positive for Covid-19. It was right before Scotland went into lockdown.
43-year old Scott also began developing systems of coronavirus. Within the week, he was put into a medically induced coma.
Norma and her partner both died on Sundays, a week apart. At the same time, Scott’s condition was deteriorating. “When I was in the ICU fighting for my life, Mum was passing away,” he said to the BBC. It reached the point where they would have to decide whether or not to take him off life support. However, he pulled through and was eventually brought out of the coma. He wasn’t aware of his family passing until a nurse informed him.
The virus also took its toll on his personal health. Scott lost 22kg and had to learn to walk again. He doesn’t know when he’ll be well enough to return to work.
Scott wants his story to remind people how dangerous Covid-19 is.
“People need to understand that this is a real killer, really. I just, I don’t think people are taking it seriously.”
Scotland, where Scott lives, is currently moving into a new phase of lockdown. As of the writing of this article, 4208 people have died of Covid-19 in Scotland. The country has the virus at least somewhat under control, with deaths per day consistently falling overall since April.
