I’m sure there are better ways to draw attention to yourself than staging a hate crime. I know you wouldn’t want to wish a hate crime on your worst enemy, so why pretend to go through one yourself?
Jussie Smollett has been all over the news and social media. On January 29th, the ‘Empire’ actor was allegedly attacked on the streets of downtown Chicago. Smollett claimed that his attackers were two white men wearing MAGA hats, armed with a bottle of bleach and a rope noose.
Smollett claimed that the men screamed homophobic and racist slurs at him such as “this is MAGA country”, and proceeded to beat him, dump the bleach all over him, wrapped the noose around his neck, and let him there in the street.

Some things seemed fishy about the situation, and many people thought Smollett’s recollection of the story was missing a couple of details. For instance, Smollett had a Subway sandwich on him that remained perfectly intact. There was no CCTV footage of what happened. And finding two white men in Chicago at 2AM is probably an unlikely occurrence. And aside from that, it was hard to piece together any real evidence other than the fact that Smollett was a little bruised up.
The media picked up the story, claiming it showcased how Trump’s presidency sparked racism and hate towards minorities. Smollett defended his story and proposed that anyone who did not believe that the attack happened was ultimately a racist.
Here’s what Smollett said to ABC News:
“The vast majority of people have been supportive and loving and understanding. (Everyone would believe me) if I had said it was a Muslim or a Mexican or someone black. I feel like the doubters would have supported me a lot much more. A lot more, and that says a lot about the place that we are in our country.”
But soon after stating this, Smollett wiped his account of any post that had to do with the attack, which added to the public’s suspicion.

It didn’t stop there. The police were finally able to make an arrest—a pair of brothers, both African American men, who were in the area at the time of the attack, and one of whom Smollett knew as his personal trainer. When the police threatened to charge the brothers with hate crimes and battery, they admitted that Smollett actually paid them to attack him. They revealed that they had even practiced the scene a couple days before. Evidence that the brothers bought the noose at a hardware store also surfaced. Here’s what the brothers look like:

Unless this is White Chicks all over again, I highly doubt these two were white men dressed in MAGA hats. All the evidence was just snowballing against Smollett at this point. It was later discovered that Smollett had been lying to the police all along. Apparently, back in 2007, he provided the police with false information when he was arrested for a DUI. And though not confirmed as yet, it is possible that Smollett was sending himself homophobic, racist letters while he was working on the set of “Empire”.

The rumor was that Smollett wanted to draw attention to himself to get better pay for his role on ‘Empire’ and increase his fame. Well, at least he got part of his wish. Now, he’s famous for being a criminal, and he’s probably gonna lose his role on the show. Sucks, but that’s what you get for lying when hate crimes are such a serious problem in this country already.
