The Modern Prometheus: How Trump’s and Bezos’ AI Projects Affect Workers

There have been recent advancements in AI automation and manufacturing, as well as national AI regulations. Trump, Bezos, and Sanders have opinions on this topic that display its divisiveness.

Within two days of each other, the Trump administration proposed a National AI Framework and Jeff Bezos expanded funding for Project Prometheus. These actions will affect both the public and private sectors regarding AI.

Artificial intelligence has been a contentious topic in the United States since OpenAI and ChatGPT were first introduced. There have been concerns about how AI will impact the workforce and that it will take jobs away from Americans. Others believe AI is integral to progression and will revolutionize production.

As AI progresses, there is more nuance in how different AI projects work together. The Trump administration has made its first moves towards AI regulation, while Bezos has expanded his AI projects. Concerns about how to balance AI regulation with economic and technological freedom have grown because of these actions.

Jeff Bezos’ Project Prometheus

Jeff Bezos founded Project Prometheus late last year but has recently expanded its investments and funding. Project Prometheus is an artificial intelligence startup focused on the progression of AI in manufacturing.

The newly established fund is specifically aiming to buy companies and manufacturers, including leading industries such as chip production, defense, and aerospace. Project Prometheus has already hired over 100 skilled employees. These workers include the top AI researchers from companies such as OpenAI and Meta.

Through this funding, Bezos will be able to transform the manufacturing industry and workforce. Project Prometheus aims to rapidly progress automation in manufacturing and make it quick, efficient, and profitable. This will affect the workforce as people will lose their jobs because of the expansion of AI and its efficiency.

Bezos’ actions are reflected in his management of Amazon. Last year, it was reported that Amazon may reduce their hiring number by 600,000. This is thanks to a growing reliance on automated manufacturing and robotics. Bezos’ behavior can inform where he goes with Project Prometheus and how it will affect workers.

Trumps National AI Framework

The National Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence, proposed by the Trump administration, covers a wide scope of AI regulations, including protecting children, intellectual rights, free speech, and more.

The framework also includes encouraging Congress to create certain AI licensing laws. This aims to compensate creators when AI uses their digital content for training. It also highlights the negative impact of AI on children and proposes some age restrictions for certain AI resources.

While the framework does protect individuals from AI, it mainly focuses on how citizens should adapt to it. The framework makes it clear that the United States should be the leading country in AI development, and regulations should not compromise this.

“The United States must lead the world in AI by removing barriers to innovation, accelerating deployment of AI applications across sectors, and ensuring broad access to the testing environments needed to build world-class AI systems.”

National Policy Framework on Artificial Intelligence

The framework calls for small businesses to take advantage of AI and for Congress to create incentives such as grants and assistance programs. It also emphasizes how Americans should work with the benefits of “AI-driven growth” and not just focus on the adverse effects of AI programs.

The framework calls for Congress to expand certain education programs to focus on AI and workforce training. It emphasizes teaching students how to use AI and integrate it into their future jobs, as well as encouraging them to go into new jobs created by “an AI-powered economy.”

How do these AI projects influence each other?

These two projects both contradict and work with each other. The National Framework still prioritizes the expansion of AI for economic and technological progression, which supports Project Prometheus’ goals of accelerating automation in manufacturing.

However, the initiatives differ in their impact on the workforce. The National Policy Framework gives special attention to workers affected by AI while Project Prometheus disregards them. This shows the disconnect between the public and private sectors regarding AI and human labor, especially in manufacturing.

The framework can try to help Americans keep their jobs, but overall cannot infringe upon the technological development of private companies. Despite this disconnect, the framework still tries to remedy the workforce concerns by encouraging AI-centered education to prepare the youth for a AI-powered workforce.

Even though there are efforts to promote education to reduce AI from taking jobs, it doesn’t compensate for the number of jobs already lost. The 100 AI research specialists hired for Project Prometheus do not make up for the 600,000 jobs removed from Amazon.

Bernie Sanders’ statement

Due to the heightened tensions regarding AI, Bernie Sanders made a statement on X. He specifically mentions Project Prometheus and how it will affect the work force. Sanders emphasizes the importance of human labor and how AI automation in manufacturing will take jobs away from Americans.

Sanders states, “Jeff Bezos, worth $234 billion, plans to replace 600,000 Amazon workers with robots.” He makes the monetary difference between Bezos and his workers clear, and warns that rapid AI automation in manufacturing will only profit those who are already rich, leaving the working class without jobs.

“Oligarchs are waging all out war against workers. FIGHT BACK.”

How does this affect me?

The push and pull of the National Framework and Project Prometheus create a complicated impact on the workforce. The National Framework has the most protections for workers we have seen so far, but the AI regulations are not being enforced as quickly as the development of new AI.

The framework promotes ways that AI can benefit small businesses and not just large corporations. The education initiatives for young people in the workforce are also positive. However, they do little to actually protect workers because of the focus on how important technological and economic development is.

As Sanders stated, AI is currently benefiting the rich and powerful the most. The National Framework does not mention human labor in manufacturing and emphasizes the ways AI has created new jobs in different sectors. This does not account for the disparities between skilled and unskilled labor, with most jobs that AI has created existing solely in the skilled labor sector.

The emphasis on new jobs disregards the number of unskilled labor jobs that are being dissolved. In areas such as manufacturing and factory work, higher education is typically less important and therefore makes these jobs more vulnerable to the expansion of AI.

The future of AI and the workforce

By getting rid of thousands of manufacturing jobs and promoting jobs in the AI sector, people who work in manufacturing will be disproportionately affected. The bridge between manufacturing jobs and AI sector jobs is virtually nonexistent. Most of the factory workers who are fired because of AI automation will not be able to find AI sector jobs due to the vast difference in skillset and education required to work in them. This makes the argument that automation would create new jobs obsolete.

While there has been progress to try to protect human labor amidst growing AI use, federal regulations are not keeping up with the rapid progression of AI. The National Policy Framework for Artificial Intelligence is a good sign, but more needs to be done in order for it to be effective.
