On Thursday, there was an attack on a Michigan Synagogue that was deemed a direct act of hate towards the Jewish community. This attack was committed during a surge of antisemitic acts since the start of the Iran bombings.

The attack was on a Synagogue named Temple Israel located in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan. The Synagogue is also a school and childcare center with over 140 students enrolled. No students, teachers, or other Synagogue members were hurt in the attack. One security guard was harmed by the attacker’s vehicle, and more than 50 officers and first responders were harmed due to smoke inhalation.

The attacker was identified as 41-year-old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali by the Department of Homeland Security. Ghazali was born in Lebanon but has been a naturalized U.S. citizen since 2016.

Ghazali was found dead at the scene, severely burned, and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This made him the only casualty. His motives for the attack have not been confirmed. However, officials have made comments on a connection to the attacks on Iran.

Investigators have reported that Ghazali lost multiple family members in an Israeli airstrike on Lebanon. Ghazali was also identified in federal databases as having connections to individuals who align with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Timeline of the Synagogue attack

Ghazali drove his car into the Temple Israel Synagogue, and police responded to it as an “active shooter” threat at approximately 12:30pm local time. Soon after the attack, law enforcement officers were ordered to patrol surrounding synagogues and other places of worship in case of further attacks.

Ghazali hit a security guard with his car when driving into the Synagogue. After the vehicle entered, security engaged in gunfire with the suspect. FBI Special Agent Jennifer Runyan stated that Ghazali shot at the security guards through the windshield of the car, at which point two guards fired back.

During the gunfight, the car’s engine compartment caught on fire, filling the Synagogue with smoke. Sometime between the initial gunfire and the car engine igniting, Ghazali died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

After Ghazali’s death was confirmed, officials started investigating the scene. Those investigating included county police officers, Michigan State Police, and FBI agents. Emergency responders found large quantities of fireworks and suspected jugs of gasoline in the back of the car. Bomb technicians and bomb dogs were present at the scene in case of an emergency.

After the initial crime scene investigation, over 50 first responders were treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation. The investigation continued with the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI. They began identifying the suspect and his connections to Lebanon, potential motives behind the attack, and potential connections to Hezbollah.

What officials are saying

There have been many statements made about the attack on Temple Israel on both the local and federal levels. Even though there has been no confirmed motive behind the attack on Temple Israel, the FBI made a statement calling the attack a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.” The governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer, then stated, “Antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan,” as well as speaking to the updates of the investigation.

The Michigan Attorney General, Dana Nessel, also made a statement saying, “Antisemitism has no place in Michigan and cannot be tolerated. In moments like these, it’s more important than ever that we come together, stand with our neighbors, confront hate whenever it appears, and build stronger communities.” Nessels’ stress on community and unity emphasizes the impact of antisemitism on locals, not just on an international scale.

President Donald Trump was also briefed on the attack and made a comment at the White House. Trump stated, “We want to send our love to the Michigan Jewish community and all the people in the Detroit area following the attack on the Jewish synagogue.” President Trump emphasized the tragedy of the attack. However, he made no comment on how the investigation or the safety of Jewish communities should be handled.

Rise of antisemitism

There has been a rise in antisemitism in the United States and around the world since the initial Israel-Palestine conflict started. Furthermore, the recent attacks on Iran have spiked antisemitic acts even higher.

The Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) website published research from its Antisemitism Research Center (ARC) earlier this month. The ARC research stated that there has been a 34% increase in antisemitic actions worldwide since the start of the Iran attacks.

The CAM website also cites how the Iran attacks have influenced multiple specific antisemitic attacks like this in the past two weeks. These include multiple statements made by New York-based groups endorsing Iranian attacks on “Zionist forces and settlers.” There have also been demonstrations in London, England, of groups chanting to “Boom, Boom, Tel Aviv.” As well as an active shooter wearing an Iranian flag with a history of antisemitic social media posts in Austin, Texas. The suspect killed three people in the shooting.

The ARC has been monitoring a total of 154 attacks. They have stated that 73, or almost 50%, of these attacks have been driven by the Iran conflict. This is because Israel and the United States are the countries leading the attacks on Iran. This has caused many people to blame the Jewish community, not just the state of Israel, for the conflict.

Impacts of domestic antisemitic attacks

One of the biggest impacts of domestic antisemitic attacks is how they affect local religious communities. Many members of Temple Israel have expressed their concern for the safety of Synagogue attendees. One member, Lisa Stern, stated that she saw parents and guardians on the ground outside the Synagogue waiting to hear if their children were safe. Tragic events like this will leave a lasting impact on communities forever. Many members, especially those with children in the care center, may feel unsafe to return to the temple in the future.

As antisemitic rhetoric becomes normalized, the potential for more attacks grows. This will affect Jewish Americans most of all. Community is what allows people to get through tough times. When entire communities are under threat, it can create issues and uncertainty on a personal level as well.

Domestic antisemitic attacks have also served as a reminder that the Iran attacks are not solely an overseas issue. Many Americans believe that the attacks on Iran will not affect them personally because it is localized in the Middle East. However, attacks like the one on Temple Israel prove that the Iran conflict has direct impacts on local American communities as well.
