March brought some rather shocking news to the fashion world: legendary designer John Galliano returned. From the runway-obsessed to the red carpet viewers, this announcement was unmissable. Almost two years since stepping down from the creative director of Maison Margiela, Galliano is back — but for Zara. This news raised many questions. Do Zara consumers even know who Galliano is?

From ready-to-wear to haute couture collections, the work of British fashion designer Galliano is well-known and highly respected. Starting his namesake brand in 1988 after graduating from college, Galliano struggled to find his footing. With the encouragement of Anna Wintour, Galliano became Creative Director of Givenchy in 1995. This was the first time a British designer was behind the reins of the French fashion house. Galliano moved to Dior as Chief Designer after a year at Givenchy, where iconic pieces were born, like the royal blue dress Princess Diana wore at the 1996 Met Gala or the infamous Saddle bag.

Galliano’s name is most known for his influence on the fashion industry, especially for his time at Dior, where his maximalism met theatrical timepieces. This esteemed reputation all came to a crash in 2011. A Paris court convicted Galliano for anti-semitic comments, leading him to be fired from both Dior and his own label, which is now entirely owned by LVMH. This caused an immediate shift in the industry; most were disappointed by Galliano and how this tainted his incredible art. After some time, Maison Margiela picked him up in 2014, where he worked as Creative Director until he stepped down in 2024. There have been nothing but crickets from Galliano ever since the announcement of the Zara partnership.

Where ready-to-wear meets ready for the rack

Zara, a Spanish-made retailer that is now worldwide, often takes inspiration from designs on the runway; however, taking the designer from the runway is new. The brand uses fast fashion, which is widely frowned upon as it mass-produces pieces with low-quality fabrics to mimic the runway looks as fast as possible. In just two to three weeks, brands like Zara can have runway look-alikes in stores. In turn, this affects the planet by generating 10% of global carbon emissions and contributing to the waste crisis.

When thinking of Zara and Galliano two different images appear. On one side, you have Zara’s simplistic stores with minimalistic clothing, and on the other, you have Galliano’s dramatic pieces. This begs the question, where do Galliano and Zara meet in the middle? How does an elite fashion designer and a fast fashion warehouse mesh? Galliano will be doing seasonal collections for two years. During this partnership, he will “reauthor” Zara’s archives as a way to bring new life to old designs. Who even knew Zara had archives?

This is not the first time we have seen something like this at a fast fashion retailer. In the past, H&M has teamed up with famous designers like Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, Versace, and more. Brands do this when they are trying to elevate their presence. These middle-level brands can’t compete with the budgets of brands like Shein or Temu, but also cannot reach the luxury level of quality. Zara has been trying to raise their bar for a while now, between redoing stores and dressing Bad Bunny for Super Bowl ’26. This is where Galliano comes into play. With past collabs from other brands being successful, why is this one so controversial?

The mixed feelings

This announcement was met with many different opinions. This is due to controversy on both ends: Zara’s fast fashion and Galliano’s comments. Galliano moving to such a low brand could taint his reputation – what is left of it that is. On the other hand, Galliano working for Zara can really uplift the brand as they struggle in the market.

Most of these mixed feelings come from Galliano already being disliked for his personality, and Zara’s fast fashion process harming the Earth. Here we have the statement separate the art from the artist come into play. Galliano’s work can be celebrated while Galliano can still be held accountable for his actions. Although it seems Zara is taking a sustainable approach by having Galliano rework old pieces. Even in the press release that announced this information, it repeatedly mentions that the point is to rework past collections, which seems sustainable.

These changes in production could alter many other facets of Zara. What should be expected of a price point of clothing made by the same hands that produced early 2000s Christian Dior Couture? Prices will have to rise to support the budget while simultaneously adhering to their current audience.

Galliano’s upper hand

Many viewers, fashion lovers, and retail consumers are wondering how this will work. Should it be expected to see intricate couture pieces on the Zara racks, or will Galliano’s work be anticlimactic? LVMH owns all of its old work and designs, so we can expect something brand new here.

While listening to the podcast “Style-ish,” which is a fashion and beauty podcast, I noted something they mentioned that was striking. The best way for this partnership to work is if Galliano and Zara use the scarcity model, which is a principle often used in marketing. When brands release a product and call it “limited,” it reels in higher demand.

If Galliano’s seasonal collections are limited for a certain amount of time or only a certain number is produced, it will make the items feel so much more exclusive. This is why this partnership is a win-win for Galliano. People want his clothes no matter what, and he’s getting a check out of it.

How Galliano is sending fashion forward

This partnership is a clear indicator of where the fashion industry is headed. This will cause a major shift in the industry as we will see more middle-level fast fashion companies working with luxury brands. If Galliano’s first collection is a hit, all the other brands will follow. This change will hit fast because it will open the door for the everyday consumer to have clothes made by genius eyes. Bringing a bigger audience to the major fashion world could actually make higher-quality pieces more accessible and affordable.

In addition, Zara just announced another name they are adding to their roster. Willy Chavarria, who is a Mexican-American fashion designer, has his own label and was also Senior Vice President of Calvin Klein until 2024. This collection, titled “VATISIMO,” was just released and has many Spanish influences. Looking at the collection, there were prices ranging from $25 socks to a $529.00 leather jacket. Comparing these prices to current collections on Zara’s website, the most expensive items were in the three hundreds, while most of Chavarria’s collection was well over $150. This shows us what we can expect for Galliano’s seasonal collections and those of future designers working with retailers.

This collab between Galliano and Zara is more than just a creative partnership; it’s symbolic. Even though his work will forever be legendary, Galliano never fully recovered from his harsh comments in 2011. Galliano’s first collection will be dropping in September of 2026, which will really make or break his legacy. In the press release announcing the partnership, Galliano described this as “his third act.” At the age of 65, this could very well be his last act for the fashion industry, and it could also change fashion forever.
