Summerween Essentials: How to Channel Fall Vibes in the Summer

Bringing you the ultimate guide to Summerween, the internet’s favorite trend that fuses spooky season vibes with sunny summer fun.

Thoughts of summer typically include sandy beaches, pool parties galore, spending way too much on bikinis, and absolutely zero thoughts of Halloween. However, a new internet trend has taken over the season. Aptly dubbed “Summerween,” people are now celebrating spooky season early, bringing the sometimes creepy, often cozy vibe of fall into the heat of summer.

While it may seem like a recent trend, the term Summerween was actually popularized over a decade ago by Gravity Falls, a beloved Disney XD show that aired from 2012 to 2016. The animated series follows young twins Dipper and Mabel Pines as they spend the summer with their eccentric Great Uncle Stan in the mysterious town of Gravity Falls.

An episode from season one entitled “Summerween” was the first Halloween special of the series, premiering October 12, 2012. It introduced viewers to a yearly town tradition where locals celebrate Halloween for a second time in the summer. Complete with costumes, jack-o’-melons (yes, melons), and monster mayhem, the episode perfectly blends warm-weather fun with Halloween frights.

Although the fictional town celebrates on June 22, fans have taken the fun into their own hands, extending the spooky vibes across the entire summer. Gravity Falls has certainly had a lasting impact. It inadvertently inspired a full-fledged seasonal aesthetic. Over a decade later, it has started a trend that is nostalgic and delightfully eerie.

For many, Summerween is more than just a seasonal mashup. It’s a way to extend the joy of spooky season year-round. TikTok creator (and Summerween expert) Molly (@fearlesslymol), who has over 40,000 followers, has fully embraced the trend.

“It started from Gravity Falls, and over the last two years, I would say it’s really gained traction (this year especially),” she says. “It’s a great way to combine summer days with the spooky season vibes I crave all year long.”

So, whether you’re ready to haunt your beach day or sip a PSL by the pool, here’s a comprehensive guide to understanding the vibe of Summerween and how to make it part of your own summer plans!

Frights, camera, action!

Movies are the perfect way to set the tone for any season or holiday, and Summerween is no exception. From summer camp scares to chaotic Gen-Z whodunits, these four films will bring the spooky energy you need to make your summer nights just a little darker.

1. Fear Street trilogy

This Netflix original interconnected movie series is a gory, fast-paced rollercoaster spanning multiple decades—including a storyline set at a summer camp in Fear Street Part Two: 1978 (Molly’s personal favorite). Based on R. L. Stine’s books of the same name, the series follows teens who attempt to break the curse that has been plaguing their town for centuries.

2. Bodies, Bodies, Bodies

This A24 Gen-Z slasher is equal parts horror and satire. When a friend group of rich 20-somethings throw a party at a remote mansion, a party game goes very wrong, very fast. Hilariously unhinged and unexpectedly chilling, this movie will have you cackling as you watch the group try to find the killer among them.

3. I Know What You Did Last Summer

A group of four teens are haunted by their past after a hit-and-run accident during the previous summer break. The ultimate late-‘90s slasher flick, the friends are reunited when they find themselves stalked by a violent maniac after receiving a letter that their crime was seen. There’s now a modern sequel movie of the same name that just came out this month. It’s the perfect time to get into this iconic, suspenseful series.

4. Sinners

A recent release, this moody, Southern Gothic vampire flick is full of atmosphere. Set in 1930s Mississippi, it follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack and their cousin Sammie. The twins open a juke joint only to have to face off against a terrifying supernatural force on opening night. Between the sweltering summer heat and bloodthirsty suspense, Sinners is the perfect pick for your Summerween watchlist.

Read it and scream

Looking to add a little horror to your beach read pile? These books serve up thrills and chills, perfect for curling up by the pool or under a blanket in an over-air-conditioned room. From killer mermaids to cornfield creeps, here are five reads to keep your Summerween vibes going strong.

1. The Compound by Aisling Rawle

Released this summer, The Compound is marketed as a deadly mix between Love Island and Lord of the Flies. Lily wakes up on a remote desert compound as part of a reality show. The contestants compete for luxury goods (and maybe something much darker). Glamorous, disturbing, and deeply addictive, this books takes summer isolation to a whole new level.

2. Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant

What’s more Summerween than killer mermaids? Set on a research ship exploring the Mariana Trench, this book blends oceanic horror and scientific intrigue with gory, high-seas chaos. As the crew investigates a previous expedition gone horribly wrong, they find out that discovering the ocean’s secrets comes with a terrible price. Think Jurassic Park, but wetter and weirder.

3. Clown in a Cornfield by Adam Cesare

This book is a bloody, fast-paced slasher with all the trappings of a classic teen horror flick. Small town Kettle Springs is stuck in a culture war between its adult and teen residents. That is, until Frendo, the creepy clown mascot of the abandoned Baypen Corn Syrup Factory, goes homicidal and decides to take things into its own hands. It’s the perfect read for fans of Scream and Halloween.

4. My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones

A love letter to final girls and slasher films, this story follows a teenage outcast who knows the rules of horror better than anyone…until real-life killings start hitting too close to home. My Heart is a Chainsaw is a unique blend of horror homage and social commentary that is sharp and emotionally layered.

5. Kill Creatures by Rory Powers

One year after her three best friends vanished, Nan returns to the canyon where it all happened. Just in time for one of the girls to come back. Alive. The problem? Nan knows they were dead…because she killed them. Twisty, atmospheric, and laced with revenge, Kill Creatures is perfect for fans of Gone Girl with a summer camp fever dream edge.

“Code orange” chronicles

For die-hard fall lovers, Summerween isn’t just a vibe. It’s a mission. Objective? Code orange hunting: the sacred art of stalking stores for early Halloween and fall drops. Whether you’re hoarding pumpkin candles in July or swapping out your throw pillows before August hits, these are the spots to start your spooky scavenger hunt.

1. HomeGoods

HomeGoods is a goldmine for early autumn aesthetics. From ghost-shaped pillows to pumpkin-adorned place mats and Halloween trinkets galore, the store is often one of the first to go full fall. You’ll find cozy throws, festive candles, and even themed dishware. All perfect for sneaking some Halloween spirit into your summer setup.

“HomeGoods DELIVERED on the Summerween stuff this year and I loved it,” Molly says. “I know it wasn’t for everyone, but personally, I love all the ghosts in pool floats and the pineapple carved candles!”

2. Michaels

@fearlesslymol eeekkkk so excited that halloween has arrived @Michaels Stores !! ✨🎃 what do we think of the collection?! – @HomeGoods your turn next hehe – #halloween #spookyseason #michaelscraftstore #cozytok #spookyszn #halloweenishere #halloweendecor #falltok #codeorange #fallaesthetic #countdowntohalloween ♬ original sound – comfort_tv_

Equal parts craft haven and seasonal dreamscape, Michaels is a must-stop on any code orange route. They really honed in on the Summerween theme this year. Think surfing ghost candles, jack-o’-melon kitchen towels, and tote bags featuring poolside-lounging skeletons. Without a doubt, Michaels understood the assignment.

3. American Eagle

You may not expect your go-to for denim to lead the Halloween charge, but American Eagle is dropping adorable early fall items this year. We’re talking Snoopy-themed pajama sets, Halloween crewnecks, cozy socks, and spooky totes that are perfect for lounging indoors away from the summer heat.

4. Bath & Body Works

No code orange run is complete without a stop at Bath & Body Works. They even have a Summerween section on their website now. Their fall preview scents hit shelves fast, and they hit hard. Stock up on all the classics–Pumpkin Spice Latte, Sweater Weather, Leaves. And maybe find some potential new favorites, like Vampire Blood, I Scream Float, and Candy Apple Cauldron. From candles and hand soaps to lotions, body sprays, car fresheners, and teeny hand sanitizers, B&BW will have all that you need. Your whole house (and car, and purse) will smell like Halloween by mid-July.

Ghouls just wanna have fun

Whether you’re flying solo or planning a full-on spooky bash, Summerween is all about getting creative with your creepiness. As Molly describes it, “Summerween, to me, is an excuse for me to bring out all my fall/spooky season vibes and justify it even if it’s 100 degrees out…Who doesn’t love an excuse to throw together a cute themed party and chill?!” These activities are perfect for bringing some Halloween magic into the middle of your July heatwave.

Summerween barbecue

@fearlesslymol happy first day of summer and my official kickoff to summerween 🎃✨ 🍉 are you celebrating summerween this weekend?! – – #summerween #spookyszn #bbqszn #summersolstice #cozytok #summerweenbbq #happyhalloween #fallvibes #slashersummer #fearstreet #halloweenaesthetic #movienight #barbeque #cozyhorror #horrortok ♬ (Don't Fear) The Reaper – Blue Oyster Cult

Take your classic summer BBQ and give it a spooky twist. Throw a Summerween barbecue complete with orange creamsicle floats, a spooky playlist, and themed snacks like jack-o’-lantern cheeseburgers and mummy hotdogs. “Summerween isn’t complete without a lot of snacks,” Molly adds. “Think s’mores, popcorn, and cookies!”

Watermelon carving

No pumpkins? No problem. Also originating from Gravity Falls, watermelon carving is the perfect Summerween spin on a fall classic. Hollow one out, carve a creepy (or cute) face, and plop in a candle for instant summer-spooky décor and a refreshing snack.

Visit a carnival

Local fairs and carnivals are already packed with eerie potential—just go at night for maximum spooky vibes. Haunted rides, fried food, funhouse mirrors…it’s giving Stranger Things summer in the best way.

Spooky pizza party

@fearlesslymol summer slasher movie night but make it cozy 🍕📼🌲👻 fear street 1978 gives the perfect summerween vibes !!! – – #summerween #movienights #slashersummer #slashertok #fearstreet #pizzanight #spookyvibes #fridaythe13 #80saesthetic #scarymovies #fearstreet1978 #halloween ♬ original sound – ४ liam

Host a cozy horror movie night with DIY ghost- or pumpkin-shaped pizzas. Get creative with your toppings to make spooky ghost faces and eerie jack-o’-lantern smiles. Set the scene with dim lights, fall-scented candles, and a lineup of slasher flicks or nostalgic Halloween classics. Who says you can’t make it through all six Scream movies in one night?

Drive-in slasher movie

Check your local drive-in for any horror double features. Or, get your own projector and create a backyard version. Pack the car with cozy blankets, themed snacks, and maybe a flashlight (for dramatic effect). Watching a slasher under the stars hits different when it’s 80 degrees outside.

More than a trend: the heart behind Summerween

While Summerween might now be making its way into store aisles, its rise isn’t just about marketing. Sure, brands are quick to capitalize on any trend that gets traction—Halloween candles in July, limited-edition ghost tote bags, pumpkin-scented everything—but the core of Summerween isn’t consumerism. It’s joy. Whimsy. The comfort of nostalgia dressed up in cobwebs.

“I gravitated towards Summerween just because I love Halloween so much, so why not celebrate twice, which is why I think a lot of people have begun celebrating as well!” Molly says. That dual celebration, of spookiness and sunshine, offers a kind of escapism and creative expression that resonates with people seeking something a little magical in the middle of summer.

And as the trend spreads, some critics are quick to call it “too much,” or roll their eyes at its rise in popularity. But for Molly, it’s personal. “I love making Summerween and spooky content because it just really highlights my true, authentic self! If even one person resonates with my interests, then I’m happy. I definitely get lots of comments from people who don’t understand Summerween, but that’s okay because I understand it’s not for everyone.”

She’s also aware of the consumerist edge creeping into the trend. “I know the companies jumping on Summerween means it’s gone mainstream and borders on the over-consumption side of things,” she explains. “But if I’m out and making a code orange vlog, I’m usually just looking (that way I’m being mindful about how much I am consuming)!”

At its core, Summerween isn’t about buying more stuff. It’s about making the most out of a season, whether that means watching slasher flicks in a swimsuit, making jack-o’-lantern cheeseburgers for your best friends, or just finding your inner spooky kid again. Because sometimes, a little midyear mischief is exactly what we need.
