I used to sit in my room, scrolling through Pinterest and saving pictures of aesthetic bedrooms. I would look at the perfectly styled shelves and cozy lighting, and wonder how people built such cute spaces.

For the longest time, I never thought my room could look like that, especially on a broke girl’s budget. But I’ll let you in on a little secret. Having an aesthetic room doesn’t require a large budget or all new things.

If you make your space feel intentional, your room can improve so much just using what you already have and only buying a few small decor pieces.

Start by decluttering

I know, it’s not fun. I always dread decluttering and especially cleaning out my clothes.

Most of us would rather go out and shop for cute decor rather than sort through piles of stuff. But if there’s one thing that makes a room look better, it’s removing the clutter.

No amount of fairy lights or aesthetic decor can compete with a clean room.

When your surfaces are covered in random items, your room can start to feel chaotic. Take the time to clear off your dresser and nightstand.

Your room is a space to feel comfortable in, and when it is messy or cluttered, it triggers your brain’s stress response, raising levels of cortisol. This can make you feel more anxious or stressed.

When I have a messy room, I find it hard to fully relax. If you struggle with staying tidy, set a 10-minute timer every night and clean up as much as you can. It might help you stay on top of things.

You don’t need to become a minimalist, but make sure everything has an intentional space to go.

Also, give your room a deep cleaning and wipe everything down. This can make your room and furniture look brand new.

Shop your own room first

One of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to upgrade your room is by using things you already own.

Walk around your house and look for things to repurpose before you start filling a shopping cart.

Here are a few things to look for:

  • Books
  • Blankets
  • Candles
  • Baskets
  • Picture Frames
  • Vases or Jars
  • Plants

You can do a lot with a stack of books. Styling them on your nightstand with a plant or candle on top can give a nice look.

Blankets add color and texture to your bed. I love to have blankets folded at the end of my bed; I think it looks very clean and adds a little something extra.

Baskets are always perfect for hiding extra clutter that you don’t know what to do with while still looking decorative. They’re perfect for cords and electronics, important documents, beauty products, or just extra stuff you don’t know what to do with.

Vases and picture frames are always nice to add style to your shelves as well. Print out some of your favorite photos sitting in your camera roll.

The key is to not think of things as purely functional but how they can elevate your space.

Rearrange the space

Moving furniture around your room can make it feel brand new without spending a single dollar.

Look through Pinterest to find room styles you like and get different ideas of how to set up your space. You can also use AI like ChatGPT or Google Gemini to take a photo of your bedroom and have it suggest different ways to rearrange the furniture.

A different layout can change the whole vibe of your room. The best part is, if you don’t like it, you can always move it back.

If you want to go even further with this, follow the rules of feng shui. It is a Chinese philosophy that focuses on arranging your furniture to harmonize universal energy. It can make your home feel less heavy and flow better.

Some feng shui rules to consider include:

  1. Never have your bed or couch in alignment with the doorway, and ensure there are spaces to walk on both sides of the bed.
  2. Decorate with natural woods and earthy tones. It makes for a soothing atmosphere.
  3. Mirrors are great to reflect positive energy, but do not place them where they will reflect images of your bed; it may disturb your sleep.
  4. Avoid placing bulky furniture at the room’s entrance.

Lighting changes everything

If there’s one upgrade worth making, improve your lighting.

There are so many directions to go with this, and lighting can make your aesthetic come to life.

Overhead lighting is practical, but it rarely creates the cozy atmosphere that you see in your inspiration photos online.

Think about how different your room feels during golden hour when sunlight pours through the windows. Soft lighting makes a space feel warmer and more inviting.

You can add fairy lights or lamps to get that soft mood. There are also light bars and LED strips to stick under shelves or behind your TV to give a more luxurious feel.

Here are a few affordable options I found on Amazon:

These may not be your personal style, but shop around, and you may find some cheap lighting to match your own aesthetic.

Add personal touches

When I see a room online, I am tempted to buy and copy everything exactly. But matching someone else can take your personality out of the room. This is your bedroom, not a showroom.

Some of the best decor is personal.

Maybe display your favorite photos, or add trinkets you’ve collected from traveling. If you have any hobbies, you can display those as well using things like instruments, records, cameras, artwork, or whatever you are interested in. Those personal touches make your room unique.

Doing DIY’s is another great way to customize your room for cheap. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. You can DIY almost anything.

Even repurposing an item can make a fun new decor piece.

If you have a little money to spend

Once you’ve decluttered, rearranged, and worked with what you already own, you might realize you don’t need much else.

But if you have a small budget, focus on pieces that make a big impact.

Throw blankets, decorative pillows, picture frames, curtains, and small lamps can completely change the look of a room without costing too much.

You can find cheap pieces at thrift stores or discount retailers. Another great option is to find decor on Shein or Temu. While they may not always be the best quality, they are certainly affordable.

Your dream room doesn’t have to be expensive

If you are unhappy with your current room, try out some of the tips in this article. You may be surprised by how much of a change you can make without buying anything.

Social media can convince us that an aesthetic room requires a shopping spree.

In my opinion, some of the cutest and coziest rooms I have seen aren’t filled with expensive things; they are just clean and intentional with the way they are set up.

Of course, the final product may not look perfect or be exactly what you were looking for. But when you are on a budget, you have to make it work.

So, before you go break the bank with a new room, try decluttering a corner and moving some furniture around. Your dream room may be closer than you think.
