Woman Living in Remote Yukon Shares The Dangerous Two Day Trip She Has to Make to Get Food

Woman has a difficult journey to get to the supermarket.

Sinead Meader, a nutrition coach living in remote Yukon, has to make a dangerous journey just so she can do her food shopping!

Where is Yukon?

Yukon is a territory that is situated in North West Canada. It is known for its beautiful landscapes and its sparse population.

If you are a big shopper then this location is not for you! It has very few supermarkets and for Sinead Meader, her nearest supermarket is 544km from her home. Imagine traveling that distance just to get your essentials. Clearly, this journey isn’t an ideal option so this means that Meader only goes to town every six to eight weeks.

In her TikTok, she tells us that the drive is five hours one way, with no phone service. It sounds very lonely and I simply cannot imagine having to do that. Next time you complain about having to do your weekly shop, just remember not everyone has it that easy!

Despite the downside of her journey, Meader chooses to look on the bright side…

It can be tiring but the view sure is beautiful.

What is the journey like?

Visibility is limited even in clear conditions. Animals can run into the road, or you can break down and you may not see a car, and you have no cell service.

I’ll be honest, she definitely is not selling this lifestyle to me! This sounds like it could turn into your worst nightmare. Meader even goes on to reveal how much her shopping costs her and let me warn you, it costs way more than your weekly shop!

On some trips, she can spend $1000 just on food as she needs to rely on stocking up so she doesn’t have to repeat this journey for a while. Do not forget to factor in the fact that due to weather conditions in the winter, she normally has to plan an overnight stay so this adds to the overall cost of her journey.

What does she buy?

You are probably thinking what does she actually buy when she travels this far to get her food. She mainly relies on canned food or frozen food purely because this lasts for longer and saves her from going back and forth. Whenever she does buy fresh fruit and veg she has to make sure she uses it quickly so it does not go out of date.

What if she gets a craving? How does she deal with that? Meader revealed that there is a small convenience store in her town but it is quite expensive. Would you pay extra just to avoid the 544km journey?

A story like Meader’s really makes you appreciate the little things in life. We take it for granted that we can just pop to the local supermarket when we need something, but this is not the case for everyone. Next time you pop to the shop, just imagine the journey that Meader has to take!
