The Best Staycations And Travel Locations in the UK This Autumn

Where to go.

With summer safely tucked away in our memory boxes as a moment of less travel and more stay-put, here are the best places to visit without that lockdown guilt.

Summer is in the rearview and now autumn is fast-approaching so if you missed some quality time with family and friends then here are some travel locations to reconnect with your loved ones (or to escape them).

North Coast 500 (NC500), Scotland

A stretch of road spanning 516 miles of Scottish scenery, where you can plan your trip according to which landmarks you desire to see most.  During this journey, you have the choice of staying in caravans, bothies or pitching a tent amongst the tim’rous beasties of the Highlands. Planning your trip could not be easier with this handy North Coast 500 website hosting the best tips on how to put the treat in your retreat. After a long day of travelling there is no greater feeling than a dram next to a crackling fire but drink responsibly, unless you are in the passenger seat.

Travel tip: Take road trips, just do not be the one driving.

Seaside shenanigans

Perhaps you like seaside castles, perhaps you are a sultry siren upon a rock, looking for her next victim or perhaps you just love Ireland. Portrush is an idyllic seaside setting in Northern Ireland with three sandy beaches and a golf course for, you guessed it, golfing. There’s more. Located nearby is Dunluce Castle, a Medieval landmark with an illustrious history of sieges and rumours of a banshee roaming the grounds. So if you need a break from studying at home, or simply want to escape for the weekend then head to booking.com and type ‘Portrush’ into that lickle search bar.

Travel tip: Scream out your hotel window in the night to fool the locals into thinking the banshee is back

Visit a national park

Returning to nature seems to be the only recreational solace during this year’s time in lockdown so with the government phasing now softening, a trip further (or closer depending on your geographical whereabouts) afield may seem appealing. The Lake District National Park, now a world heritage site, has 3100 kilometres to roam at your heart’s content, chef’s choice. On offer there are walks, cycling, boat rides on the lake or even stargazing when it gets to the dark time of the day. Although guided walks are cancelled due to lack of volunteers caused by COVID-19, you can plan your own route, just brush up on your map-reading skills. There are 48 routes to chose from each with a difficulty rating depending on your ability and mobility, so be kind to your legs.

Travel tip: Being kind to your legs can look like; taking rests, regular but not constant hydration and respectable trouserings.

Adopt a pumpkin

Tutton Park in Chesire offers up the adoption of a pumpkin for a respectable £12, which includes, farm entry, park entry and your very own pumpkin child, for keepsies. The pumpkin patch will operate between the 26th of October and the 31st, fun for the family, for friends and for cavorting with spirits. If this location does not suit then there are other pumpkin patches, such as Cairnie fruit farm (located in Scotland) and Clearwell farm (located in Wales).

Travel tip: If being the parent to a pumpkin is too much pressure then you can let your pumpkin baby rot or make a delicious soup.

Can you say spooky? (seriously, I have a lisp)

Continuing on with the theme of Halloween and the flavour of travel, I present to you the Cairnie maze of maise in Fife, Scotland. A source of mystery for the family, and this Halloween there will be a torchlight maze commencing on October 31st and ending on the 2nd of November. A corn-acopia of spookiness. In previous years the maze was in the shape of a hedgehog (2018), a sea turtle (2019) and this year we have the terrifying sunflower… well in the cover of darkness it is going to be much more horrifying.

The aforementioned Clearwell farm in Wales also plays host to a maize maze so follow the link to find out more about dates and pricing. If you darrreee…

Travel tip: If you get stuck in the maze then use your emergency butter and eat your way out.

If travel is something you are comfortable with then gas up your vehicular contraption and godspeed, but if it is not then that is perfectly okay too. Be kind to staff and wear a mask when required, except you Micheal Myers (and leave Jamie-Lee Curtis alone).
