The first trailer for a documentary about the life of Anthony Bourdain, the American celebrity chef, has just been released. Bourdain passed away in 2018, and the feature will most certainly be an emotional tribute to the celebrated chef.
Roadrunner will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 11 before being released to the public on July 16. It’s directed by Morgan Neville, winner of the 2014 Academy Award Winner 20 Feet From Stardom in 2014, and is already tipped to win at the Oscars next year.
The trailer uses archival footage to reveal how the celebrity chef became a household name and gave the world wise advice about life that was oftentimes, unrelated to cooking. Additionally, the documentary will use previous interviews and conversations with his famous friends about the philosophy that drove him.
Following the trailer’s debut online, it has already left fans in tears, with one person writing: “It feels so weird to remember that we live in a world he’s no longer in, and yet for people who love him – he’s actually everywhere. Thank you for everything, Tony. You have done so much for me, even after you’ve passed.”
Damn. This just made tear up.

I still remember reading Kitchen Confidential when I was 17 and telling myself that I was going to be a chef one day. https://t.co/2u18WsVu54
Another person wrote of how “Anthony’s writing and narration struck a deep chord with me,” all thanks to the way he “treated his audience as thinking adults.”
Bourdain soared into the public’s cultural zeitgeist when he released his book Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly in 2000. Leading a full, event-filled life, he went on to star in his own shows on the Food Network and the Travel Channel like A Cook’s Tour (2002) and Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, the latter of which earned him two Emmy nominations.
He died in 2018 after friend and fellow chef Eric Ripert found him unresponsive in a hotel in France, where he was filming an upcoming series for the Travel Channel, with his death being treated as a suicide. Roadrunner is set to honour his legacy.
