The vegan alternative will be available in parts of the U.K. by late September

The McPlant- which has been in the works for over three years- will be a plant-based alternative to McDonald’s wide range of meat-based options.

According to the fast-food giant, McDonald’s has worked with Beyond Meat, a producer of plant-based meat substitutes, in order to create the plant-based patty, and was developed with “taste and quality top-of-mind”.

The company has also developed a new vegan cheese- based on pea protein, they claim it “tastes just like McDonald’s iconic cheese slices”

“The impressive McPlant features a Vegan Sesame Bun, Mustard, Ketchup, Vegan Sauce, Fresh Onion, Pickles, Lettuce, Tomato, and Vegan Cheese.”

The meat-free burger has been fully certified by the Vegetarian Society as being vegan, and McDonald’s has also stated that The McPlant will be prepared separately and using different utensils from its other menu items which may contain animal products in order to ensure there is no cross-contamination.

Chief Marketing Officer for McDonald’s UK and Ireland, Michelle Graham-Clare, stated that the company is “pleased to be finally launching McPlant in the UK and Ireland.”

She added, “As with every McDonald’s offering, we take our time to ensure it meets the highest standards and is something that all our customers will enjoy.”

Although The McPlant is only being trialed in 10 stores across the U.K., it is believed the new burger will be rolled out nationwide in January 2022 in order to coincide with Veganuary.
