One year ago this week, all of our lives changed. Schools closed and turned to distance learning. People started working from home or losing their jobs. Wearing a mask was about to be essential every time we left our homes, which we weren’t supposed to do except for essential trips. Fast forward a year, little has changed. Businesses are starting to open up again and there is a vaccine so there is some good news. Its been rough to say the least though. There have been some interesting stories that have come out over the past year of things people are doing because they have had extra time on their hands. Mighty Buildings is designing the world’s first housing community that is built entirely by using a 3-D printer.
Rancho Mirage, California is where this new housing development is set to be built. The homes are going to be “450 square-feet and will feature three bedrooms and two bathrooms, while a separate unit on each plot will also contain two beds and a bath. Owners will be able to enjoy a swimming pool and deck as standard, though they can upgrade their space to feature hot tubs, firepits, or open-air showers” (unilad.com 1). For such a small square footage, everything seems like it will be tight but getting a pool and a deck that are standard is really cool. Mighty Buildings started working on this project late 2020 and are already almost sold out!

The homes look really nice! And the building costs are so much lower than a traditional build. The water and energy savers are a nice touch also. The whole house is run by solar which is not really new but the strength of the houses must be great to be able to hold the weight of the panels which is impressive. The only downside will probably be living in the dessert near Palm Springs with the intense, high temperatures of the summer. If you can handle that, then it sounds like a good fit! Here’s to the future of housing!
