Tommy Wiseau is quite the mysterious man. “Mastermind” behind the cult film The Room, Wiseau is as odd as they come. Exhibit A: the director recently put the entirety of The Room – dubbed the worst film ever made – on YouTube.
So who even is this guy, you ask? Unfortunately not much is known about Wiseau’s personal life. Even his age and place of birth remain an enigma. Officially, he is an actor and filmmaker who creates independent – and bad – movies. The director’s name was not even mainstream until James Franco released The Disaster Artist. Franco’s movie is based on a book of the same name (written by one of Wiseau’s best friends) that chronicles the making of The Room. Are you following?
For one reason or another, Wiseau uploaded his famed film on YouTube this week. And not to burst everyone’s bubbles, but the film has already been removed. Yet no one is quite sure why it was even put up in the first place.
The Room was released in 2003. Film critics have since labeled it “the Citizen Kane of bad movies” if that gives you any insight into the movie. The plot is supposed to revolve around a dramatic love triangle, but there are so many subplots and unresolved narratives that by the end, you have no clue how you even arrived there. Films like these rarely get praise, but they somehow always manage to gain massive cult followings. The Room, while perhaps terrible, has its loyal fan base of wig-wearing and cutlery-throwing people. Just watch the movie and you’ll know what we mean.

What has Tommy Wiseau been doing since 2003 other than inexplicably uploading his movies to YouTube? No one quite knows. The filmmaker has some other projects, but none that gained the same following as The Room. But in your free time, do some digging on this guy. You might be falling down a rabbit hole, but at least it will be entertaining.
